Obituary
Mom, Lindylou Buhr (Lindy), was born in Canora, SK to Otto and Mary Steinhauer on July 23, 1936. It was one of the many hometowns she would have in her lifetime as she moved many times as a daughter of a railroader. As a result of the many moves, she often referred to herself as a person with itchy feet meaning she liked to move and was always up for a drive, long or short. Lucky Lake became home to her when she married a local farm boy, John Buhr whom she met in high school. Mom was recently predeceased by dad in October 2020 – Dad was her soul mate and partner. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in August 2020. While her life was full with happiness and joy prior to 2020, the pandemic and Dad’s loss was very difficult for Mom. She walked into Lucky Lake care home in February 2021 to start a new chapter in her life but her health quickly deteriorated. She died peacefully on Monday, July 26 after just celebrating her 85th birthday with her family on Friday.
Both family and community were very important to Mom and often both became intertwined. Mom attended the University of Saskatchewan to become a teacher, a career she loved and she was a mentor to many. She was Mrs. Buhr to many former students long after she was no longer their teacher. Mom was a Kinette for many years as well as a United Church Member and long-time organist.
Mom loved to visit and she was always ready to put on a pot of coffee to welcome you to her home. Coffee would never be served without lunch which was often an elaborate spread. You rarely left the house without getting fed. Mom had the reputation as being a very good host and cook.
Family gatherings were especially important to Mom. She loved when the house was full. She loved her children Jaymeann, Ward (Lori), Shawn (Tracy) and JoAnn. Grandchildren, Kendra (Jordon), Jarret (Ashton), Ross (Eden), Mykaela, Colton and Jackson and great-grandchildren Ethan, Konnor, Quinn and Charli. She also claimed a number of people as her adopted children and adopted sisters. You know who you are, as she loved many people. She openly shared her kind spirit and love of life.
Mom was happiest when she was hosting guests, or going for drives. She enjoyed traveling and when traveling, one of her favourite things was to visit grocery stores to find different items to bring home. Mom liked to bake and cook and she collected many cookbooks over the years. She was always open to try new recipes but not always with success (wiener casserole). Christmas baking was months long, starting shortly after harvest and continuing right to Christmas where the spoils could finally be enjoyed.
While teaching in Beechy one of Mom’s adopted family (Sharon Romanow) introduced her to Pysanka or better known as Ukrainian Easter eggs. This became a passion for mom for the next 40 years and her skill was amazing. The legacy of her eggs endures as we all have eggs she created as keepsakes.
Mom will be remembered for many things including; ‘Would you like coffee?’, ‘Have you eaten yet?’ Walking you to the door or often your car in sock feet (winter and summer) and ‘Call when you get home’. Goodbye Mom and say hi to Dad for us.
A Celebration of Lindy’s Life will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lucky Lake United Church with Mrs. Diane Schmidt officiating. Interment to follow in the Lakeview Cemetery. Donations may be directed to the Lucky Lake United Church, P.O. Box 28, Lucky Lake, SK, S0L 1Z0 or to your local Food Bank.
