Lowell Snodgrass passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital following open heart surgery on March 22, 2020 with family at his bedside.
He was born in Canora, Saskatchewan to Cressel and Veronica Snodgrass growing up and attending school in Preeceville until 1964 when the family moved to Herbert, Saskatchewan where Lowell completed his grade 12. After working for a year at the University of Saskatchewan campus, he decided to attend university and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1973. Following graduation, he worked for Rural Development, Ministry of Highways and AECOM developing an intimate knowledge of transportation, road design and construction retiring in 2015.
Lowell married Phyllis Zuk on October 28, 1972. They moved to Swift Current for work in 1973 and returned to Saskatoon in 1976 with their son Brian. Sons, Mark and Kevin were born in Saskatoon completing their family.
Lowell was an avid sports enthusiast playing hockey and ball as a youth and coaching softball and managing his sons’ hockey teams as a parent and curling, golfing, cross country skiing and playing slow-pitch as an adult while following his favourite sports teams, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Lowell’s community involvement included leading Beavers and Cubs in the Scout Program, coaching ball with the College Park Community Association and being an active member and leader at Grosvenor Park United Church. He was also a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan and a Certified Toastmaster. He led with kindness, honesty and with a great sense of humour.
Lowell made friends easily and enjoyed time with family and friends, fishing, card games, camping and travelling. He was able to travel throughout Canada, much of the United States, Europe, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, China, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Cuba. After Lowell retired, he was able to take some art classes which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was also a faithful participant in the CARG program at the Field House.
Lowell was a loving and supportive husband. He loved and was very proud of his sons and their families: Brian; Mark and Randie-Jo (Katie-Lynn and Jeorgia Janae who was born following his death); and Kevin and Sara. He was loved and will be deeply missed by his wife, sons and their families. Lowell will also be lovingly remembered by his brother Larry; sisters, Diana Oftebro; Irene (Andy) Heshedahl; brother-in-law Wilfird (Linda) Zuk and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Veronica and Cressel; his sister Joan Clayton; his parents-in-law Bill and Mary Zuk.
