Obituary
Carl Winston Hillier
North Sydney
It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Carl Winston Hillier, age 75, on July 1, 2021, with his family by his side.
Born in Fortune, NL, he was the son of the late Gordon and Myrtle (Tibbo) Hillier.
Carl worked for DEVCO for many years at Princess Colliery in Sydney Mines and Prince Mine in Point Aconi until sickness forced him to leave. He later worked for several years in Alberta as an electrical QA/QC inspector at the oil refineries. He was a proud member of IBEW Electrical union in Edmonton.
In his younger years, Carl enjoyed doing whatever he could for the children in the neighbourhood, so he began volunteering as a coach in the Northside minor hockey and soccer programs. He loved to fish, play the guitar, going for leisurely drives with Donna around the island and was an amateur prospector.
Carl was the pillar of his family and took great care of those around him. He proudly passed on many stories of growing up in a large family and of his many travels over the years.
Carl’s first wife Greta passed away in 2012. In 2015 he married Donna Hodgson, who became his constant companion for the remainder of his life, making his house a home again.
Carl is survived by his wife Donna (Hodgson) Hillier; by his daughter Paula Gouthro (Tim) and son, Darryl Hillier, both of North Sydney; by his loving grandchildren Aaron, Courtney and two great grandchildren Bridget, Ava who were the light of his life.
Also surviving are his five brothers, Evan (Karen), North Sydney; Cecil (Carol), Long Island; David (Deborah), Bridgewater; Eric (Gisela), Edmonton; Rollie (Laverne), Prince George; three sisters, Beverly (Mark) Aucoin, New Waterford; Marilyn (Casper) Pettipas, Edmonton; Colleen Hillier, Manitoba; many special nieces, nephews and his four legged friend Caesar, who will miss him every day.
He was predeceased by his first wife Greta, his son David, daughter Mary Louise; two brothers Albert, Gordon and a sister Mary Louise.
We would like to thank Dr. Michel McKeough, the entire palliative care team and VON for the care and compassion shown to Carl.
In lieu of lowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice/Palliative Care of Cape Breton or the Canadian Cancer Society.
