Gone Fishing…
It is with deep sadness that the family of Kim Stillman share the news of his passing on June 23, 2021 at the age of 64. Kim was born January 1, 1957 and resided on Vancouver Island most of his life. He passed away at Royal Jubilee Hospital with loved ones at his side and was cared for by the skilled hands of the team at the Cardiovascular Unit. Kim leaves behind partner Debbie, sister Marilyn, and extended family. He is pre-deceased by parents Don and Olga, brother Don, and sister Bev.
Kim loved fishing the ocean and exploring the outdoors. He spent every possible day in his boat or trailer, and days passed at home were spent thinking about where to go next. He and his partner Debbie enjoyed many beautiful days wandering the local waters and backroads, always on the lookout for the next perfect spot. Kim was a talented cook and avid kite flyer. His favourite dish, fish and chips, were a summertime staple and his kites could be seen every summer soaring the skies of Port Renfrew.
Kim spent the last 16 years at the Cowichan District Hospital working hard to ensure the staff always had everything they needed to provide exemplary care. Kim knew every face that worked in the hospital and constantly brought smiles to them all with his witty jokes, comments, and expressions. Kim was looking forward to his retirement in years to come, planning to spend more time on the water and in the bush. Although unfortunately he passed before he could make that plan a reality, that didn’t stop him from spending every spare minute doing what he loved!
Even now Kim continues to silently help those around him. Thanks to Kim’s generosity as an organ donor, up to six people will receive cornea transplants that will help them recapture the beauty of the world that Kim so loved.
In honour of Kim, a memorial plaque will be put up in the Emergency Room in Cowichan District Hospital where partner Debbie has worked for 32 years and counting. This is also where Kim and Debbie’s relationship started and was able to bloom so beautifully. Kim’s ashes will be spread at one of his favourite fishing holes: over the ocean waves at Cheanuh Marina in East Sooke, where his mother and brother were also laid to rest.
Kim was truly loved and will be cherished and missed by many. He will be remembered for his amazing cooking, his sense of humour, and most of all his stubbornness.
A celebration of Kim’s life will be held on Saturday, July 3 from 2-5pm at Kim and Debbie’s home in Maple Bay, 1883 Alma Rd.

  1. I work in the pharmacy department at Cowichan District and it always brought a smile to my face when I saw Kim. Whether we were in an elevator together or just waiting for an elevator, if you knew the elevator system at CDH there is a lot of waiting he always inquired how I was doing. He always had a smile and kind words for everyone. I will miss him.

  2. Kim was such a sweet and kind co worker. He was always eager to help out where he could with smiles and jokes along the way! He will be missed so so much from CDH. I’m lucky to have known him.
