It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Dr. Martin Simon Muir Abenheimer on Monday June 27, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Martin was the husband of Susan (Igoe) Abenheimer and the son of the late Karl and Irene (Thorburn) Abenheimer. Martin is survived by his four children, Sarah (Jacen) Groves of Fredericton NB, Andrew (Hanwool Kim) of Ottawa, ON, Rebecca (Ebenezer) Owusu-Afriyie of Bedford, NS, and Hannah Abenheimer of Toronto, ON; his brother, Matthew of Star of Markinch, Scotland; his sister, Ruth Adams of West Virginia, US; his brother, David (Lynn) of Cardiff, Wales; his sister-in-law, Pearl Anderson of Nanaimo, BC; his three grandchildren, Charlotte, Olivia, and Kaeden; his cousins; nieces and nephews; and his many brothers and sisters-in-law.
He was predeceased by his brother, Henry Anderson; sisters-in-law, Joyce, Cathy Connelly; brother-in-law, Jock Adams; mother-in-law, Kathleen Igoe; and father-in-law, John Martin Igoe.
Martin grew up in Glasgow, graduated from Glasgow University Medical School and immigrated to Canada in 1977. He completed his residency at Memorial University, St. John’s and Dalhousie University, Halifax and dedicated over 40 years of his life caring for the children of Cape Breton as a pediatrician, with several terms as Chief of Pediatrics.
He proudly represented Canada at the World Medical Football Championship in 2019, played on the Masters soccer team for years, and coached various soccer teams in Cape Breton. He was happiest when traveling the world with his wife and best friend, Susan, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and playing soccer.
Memorial donations may be made to the Pediatrics TLC Fund – Regional Hospital Foundation, The Patient Care Fund at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County, or to a charity of your choice.
Special thanks to the staff at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, and all the family, friends, and colleagues who have provided love and support to Martin and his family throughout his illness.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, July 2 from 2-5 p.m.
