Dr. Richard Shatz
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Richard Shatz on June 11, 2021. Richard was the high school sweetheart, loving husband, and best friend of Selma (née Stern) for sixty-one years. Son of the late Sadie and the late Gerald Shatz. Dearly loved father and father-in-law of Cathy Shatz and Greg Luger, Peter Shatz and Tami Chamblee, and Andrew Shatz and Sylvia Shatz. He will always be adored and remembered by his grandchildren Sarah, Rebecca, Michael, Jamie, Sydney, Jordyn, Christopher, Joshua, Ethan and Aidan. Cherished brother and brother-in-law of Phyllis and Mark Berkowitz, Karen Shatz, Esther and the late Vern Rosenberg, Anne and the late Stanley Schmerler, and Judy and the late Myer Stern. He will be missed by his aunt Mary Katz, and his many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Richard lived life to the fullest, taking the greatest pleasure in everything he did. He was kind, generous, humourous, and incredibly witty. He devoted his life to his family, cherished friends, and the practice of medicine. Richard had many hobbies including golfing, skiing, tennis, and traveling. He enjoyed planning as much as he did going on each adventure. Richard was the first doctor in the family, starting his long and illustrious career in 1967. He became an Associate Professor at McGill University, training hundreds of residents as they passed through the halls of the Jewish General Hospital. His skills, passion, and knowledge made him one of the most respected obstetrician/gynecologists in the city. His calm demeanour, and gentle sense of humour comforted his many patients during their labour and delivery. His medical colleagues greatly appreciated his diagnostic skills and his willingness to assist in complicated situations. He brought tens of thousands of children into the world, and when asked how many babies he delivered, his answer was always “ I delivered a village.” Richard was passionate about his involvement in the Chevra Kadisha B’Nai Jacob Synagogue, ultimately taking on the role of President for four years. He was a wonderful and caring father. Of all his passions, nothing compared to his love and devotion to his family. He was always involved with his children and grandchildren and was a driving force behind their growth and successes. We will always love him and he will never be forgotten. Nothing will ever fill the hole he leaves behind in our hearts. Richard had many wonderful life-long friends who will deeply miss his warm smile, tremendous heart, and loyal camaraderie. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff and Doctors at the Eldercare Hope Pavilion 3A and the Jewish General Hospital who brought great comfort and care to not only Richard, but our entire family, as his needs increased over time. A private graveside service will take place. A private Shiva will be observed. Contributions in his memory may be made to the “Dr. Richard Shatz Memorial Fund for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology” c/o the Jewish General Hospital Foundation, accessible through my.crowdchange.co/xtvnp7 or 514-340-8251.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Dr Richard Shatz 2021..
