1925-2021
After a life well lived, Margaret Chalmers (nee MacDonald) passed away peacefully in Lachine, Quebec on May 22, 2021 in her 96th year. Margaret was born in Bathurst, New Bruswick to Gilchrist and Winnifred (Taylor) MacDonald. After graduating from high school, she studied nursing in Montreal returning home to Bathurst after graduation in 1946. It was there that she married Scott Chalmers and all of her five children were born.
Margaret was the beloved wife of Thomas Scott (deceased), mother to Frederick Lorne (Mary Weckman), Greta Louise (Alan Strand), David Gilchrist (deceased), Andrew Scott (Doris Loewen) and Rebecca Anne (James McEwen) and cherished Nana to Thomas Scott Chalmers (Chelsea Robins), Simon Lorne Chalmers and Jameson Colborne David McEwen. She is also survived by her sister Greta Morton as well as many neices, nephews and grand neices and nephews.
Through Scotty’s, work the family lived in various mills towns, including Bathurst, New Richmond Quebec, Stephenville Newfoundland, and Terrace Bay Ontario. No matter where we lived, Mom always made the house we lived in a home. She devoted her time and energy to raising her family, always ensuring that we felt like the most important people in the world. Countless drives to the orthodontist, being there through childhood (and adult) illnesses or injuries and a never ending supply of desserts were a testament to her skills and love. Upon retirement, Margaret and Scott settled in Coburg,Ontario. They lived there for several years until Margaret moved to Lachine shortly after Scott’s passing in 2013.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a celebration of Margaret’s life will be held later and she will be laid to rest in Bathurst. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Margaret can do so to the David Gilchrist Chalmers Memorial Prize (co Mount Allison University, 65 York Street, Sackville, New Beunswick E4L 1E4), or the charity of their choice.
