“If there ever comes a day that we cannot be together, keep me in your heart and I will stay with you forever”
On May 14th after a 7 year heroic battle with cancer, Gary was taken from us far too soon in his 57th year. Gary met Bev the love of his life, his soulmate in high school. From there the two were inseparable. They welcomed their son Brody followed by their baby girl Courtney and built a life they loved in Stayner. Over the years Gary touched many lives, you never left a conversation with Gary without learning something. Gary had a magical way of always passing along his knowledge without you even knowing a lesson had been learned.
From a young age Gary found passion in fixing things. Gary could be found many hours in his garage tinkering on anything he could get his hands on. There was always an endless stream of projects coming through the doors, some his own, some for others. His greatest accomplishments in his garage came from working alongside Brody and Courtney helping them and teaching them how to restore their own vehicles. Gary’s passion for fixing things was not limited to his garage. He was first in line to help with any idea, venture, or renovation that someone wanted to take on. Most recently, Gary encouraged Brody to purchase a “fixer upper” farmhouse. Gary used the opportunity as another lesson. He taught Courtney to drive the skid-steer, Brody how to frame anything, Kristen how to “measure twice, cut once”, and Bev to look the other way when he hurt himself. He saw Brody and Kristen through the entire process, stating all he wanted was to see the house finished.
Although the past seven years were not easy on Gary, he took every hurtle in stride. Through every bump in the road he would smile and say “Don’t worry, I’m going to be okay”. He was a fighter right until the end. Gary’s legacy will live on in Bev, Courtney, Brody and Kristen. He will forever be missed by his best buddy, rescue dog Jake. He will be deeply missed by Don Parkes, Brad & Bonnie Parkes, Donna & Kurt Metheral, Kelly Hughson, many nieces and nephews and forever friends Tracey, Ed and family. Gary is predeceased by parents Sonny & Donna Potts and mother-in-law Louise Parkes. Gary’s memory will live on in the many friends he has met along the way.
The family would like to extend their many thanks and appreciation to the RVH Cancer Centre. No words can express the dedication and compassion that Gary received over the years. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the RVH Cancer Centre in Gary’s memory.
