Erwin Paul Wood
1935-2021
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Erwin P. Wood
of Truro. As he lived his life, he passed peacefully at the Colchester
East Hants Health Centre, with family by his side, on Sunday, April
25, 2021 after fighting a courageous fight with
Parkinson’s.
A devoted family man, he loved and adored his wife, Mona for
over 62 years. He was the best dad to his two daughters, Ruth (Rick)
and Kathy (Doug) as well as a doting grandfather to Katelyn and
Matthew Hull. He will forever be in our hearts.
Erwin’s life began on September 15, 1935 in
Humphreys Mills, New Brunswick to his parents, James and Doris Wood
and would be one of seven children. The Wood family would soon make
Cape Tormentine their home.
Life took him to Amherst, where he worked at Douglas Rogers
Insurance until construction work interested him. In 1963, now married
and a father, they moved to Truro where he would help build the
“Old” Truro Hospital. Soon after, he would join his lifelong
friend and honorary brother, Ben Robichaud (B.O. Robichaud
Construction) for the next forty plus years.
If you knew Erwin, he was a social butterfly. He enjoyed
camping with family and friends. He and Mona joined the Cobequid
Twirlers (square dancers), was a lifelong member of St.
David’s United Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir
as well as being a board member for many years. Bluegrass music became
his passion, so with Mona they would hook on the trailer and travel
near and far to Bluegrass festivals.
Known for his quiet manner, kind heart and great joke
telling, he will sadly be missed and remembered by his large family
and friends. His loving sister, Iva, along with his sisters-in-law,
brothers-in-law, and extended family. In addition to his parents,
Erwin is predeceased by his sisters, Irene and Elsie, brothers,
George, Ted and Jimmy.
There will be a graveside service at a later date in Bible
Hill Cemetery. Donations may be made in memory of Erwin to VON, as
they were a great help and comfort to both Erwin and Mona, St.
David’s United Church, or to a charity of
choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Private messages of
condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Erwin’s
