Obituary of Winnifred Elizabeth Edworthy
Winnifred Elizabeth Edworthy
(nee Allen)
A loving family woman, an eternally-dedicated wife, and a supportive friend who fostered life-long relationships, Winnifred Elizabeth Edworthy (nee Allen) passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 25, 2020 at the age of 102.5.
Born in Lyndhurst, Ont., Winnifred was raised with two older twin brothers and parents who were proud community members. She possessed a sharp, organizational mind, and went to local college to hone her clerical and bookkeeping skills. In May 1944, she married her long-time love: Aubrey Edworthy. Together, the couple moved west, making the long drive to Hardisty, Alta., where Aubrey had his first posting as United Church minister. During their time there, they welcomed daughter Patricia, followed five years later by daughter Barbara. Callings to serve at other churches in Alberta and Saskatchewan followed in subsequent years. It is an understatement to say that, in every location, this wonderful couple created and fostered friendships that lasted their entire lives.
Winnifred contributed to numerous community and church events, always ensuring everyone felt welcomed and appreciated. She was a hostess who exhibited beautiful grace and warmth, wonderful and welcoming manners and a comfortable and impeccable home. Following Aubrey’s retirement in 1984, they enjoyed hosting several cruises and tour groups to European and Pacific locations. After decades in Edmonton, they made their final return to Saskatoon in 2010, to a bright apartment overlooking the river. As was always the case, long, warm and full-of-laughter phone calls remained the order of the day-with friends and family the beneficiaries.
Throughout her life, Winnifred created a home in which her family formed lasting memories – golf, baking, crosswords, shopping trips, memory games, making clothes for all and high-level games of crokinole and Scrabble. It is a blessing to say that her great-grandchildren – all eight of them – will remember her. An engagement and curiosity of everything around her held true to the end. Winnifred was predeceased by Aubrey in 2013. She is survived by daughters Patricia Deibert (Gilbert; deceased) and Barbara and David Couves; grandchildren Susan (Darren), David (Leah), Scott (Lynne) and Nicole (Adam); and great-grandchildren Sydney, Sierra, Gwyneth, Adelaide, Aubrie, Rhea, McKinley and Nathan. She will be remembered and always loved by an extended family of nieces, nephews, Edworthys and Allens across the country. We love you bunches.
Aubrey and Winnifred will return to St. Thomas, Ont., and be laid to rest together. Memorial to be held at a later date; announcement to follow.
