Obituary
Mistat’hew Awasis (Gifted Child) is Billy’s Cree Name. He was so bonded to horses that he could sit on a horse before he was able to sit on a chair. He used to stand shirtless in the rain as a young child to let the water cleanse his spirit. He took comfort in his clear visions of running horses even during his last days. He was very athletic in his early years and enjoyed sports. He worked many intensive labor jobs. He was ingenuitive in problem solving and building solutions. Everyone will agree that he was meticulous about his signature appearance which also attributed to his unsurmountable ability to charm people. As a father he inspired his children to share his interest in ranching, horse racing, chariots and outfitting. He kept Cree culture strong by sharing his devotion to ceremonies with all around him. He was a respected elder and sundance maker. He enjoyed the healing of handgames and loved to travel and play with his family and friends in Canada and the U.S.A. His legacy will continue through his children and the existing legends of his successes in the handgame world. Ultimately Billy Wapass was both a lover and a fighter, he passionately loved and defended his family believing that love can heal all.
William has gone to join his loving parents, Peter and Bella Wapass; his brothers, John Arther and Andrew; his sisters, Hazel, Lila, Margarete, and Julianne; his son, Windy Boy; his daughter, Maureena; his grandchildren, Sundance, and Cheyanne; his adopted brothers, Felix, Alex, Baptiste, and Joe Morin; and his nephew, Gabriel.
Left to cherish Billy’s memories are: his loving and devoted wife, Theresa; his siblings, Celia, Clennell (Brad), Paul Morin (Connie), George Morin (Gloria), Bernice Plews, and Gladys Wapass-Mcadam (Jim); his children, George (Cheyenne), Sonia, Bill, Candy (Andrea), Helen, Martha, Peter Isadore, Roderick (Donna), Jason, Billie-Jo (Adrian), Jodie (Aaron), Hazel (Joey), Fatima (Howard), Reanna, Bretner James (B.J.) (Alisha), Peter Billy Jr. (Chelsea), Terri-Ann (Randy), and Rowdy; many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his chapans, Delbert (Doreen), Wallace Fox (Dolly), Peter Nippi (Jeanette), and Marcellus (James).
Throughout all of his travels in the U.S. and Canada, he touched many lives. His kind and welcoming nature brought numerous adopted children into the family. There is too many to name, but he loved and cherished all of his adopted children, family and friends. You all know who you are.
