It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and father-in-law on December 12, 2020.
Wilfred “Laverne” Barkhouse, 73, of Back Centre, Lunenburg County, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side at Mahone Nursing Home, after a long and brave battle with degenerative spinal diseases and Lewy Body Dementia. Previous to this, he was nursed and cared for by his loving and devoted wife, of whom he is survived, Patricia (Lloyd).
Laverne is survived by his two daughters, Tammy (Pat) Skinner and Karen Barkhouse, all of Back Centre; grand-daughters, Courtney Skinner and Haleigh (Jon) Enserink. Haleigh and Jon gave him his final pride and joy, a baby boy, Jack. Even though he couldn’t walk, Laverne had big plans for Jack, which included teaching him to hunt and fish. He is also survived by his half-sister, Grace (Barkhouse) Reid.
Born March 10, 1947 in Berwick, NS, and raised in Woodville, NS, he was the son of the late Harry Barkhouse and Geraldine (Wambolt) Barkhouse. He was also predeceased by his infant grand-daughter, Morgan Elizabeth, half-brother Louis Barkhouse and half-sister Mabel (Barkhouse) Reynolds.
Laverne had a passion for many things, too numerous to mention, but his love of the water led him to his career as a Marine Diesel Mechanic, taking his trade at the former Kings Regional Vocational School, Kentville, NS, in 1965.
Our father, husband and (great) grandfather was a dreamer, a doer and generous to a fault and was extremely proud of his family.
A heartfelt thank you to the people who aided in keeping Laverne at home in the last few years of his life with his beloved “Patty”, the Lunenburg County Home Support and the VON, and a special thank you to Dr. Blaine Beaton.
We the family, will be forever grateful for the kindness and compassion shown to him by the staff at Mahone Nursing Home. You went above and beyond.
