Vincent Lyon Edwards- April 21, 1946 – Nov 5, 2020
Vincent Lyon Edwards passed away peacefully at home in Carman, MB at the age of 74, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Doreen, proud father to Wendy Fontaine (Rene), Jamie (Tammy), Daniel (Lori) and Stacey James (Danny), grandfather to Colin (Jordan), Derek (Megan) and Braden Fontaine, Natalie, Nicholas, Josh, and Jacob Edwards, Kyle and Cody Edwards, great grandfather to Kaia Fontaine. Predeceased by his father Dr. William Vincent Edwards, mother Edna Mae Abercrombie, step father Frederick Abercrombie, sister Heather Bond, mother and father in law Dorothy and John Andrews and granddaughter Taryn Edwards.
Vince was born in Carman and raised in Roland, Manitoba. Having lost his father at the young age of 4, Vince’s Grandpa Swain stepped in as his father figure spending time together in the garden and going hunting. Vince tried his hardest to keep up with his older sister Heather but found he could have much more fun spending time and getting into mischief with his cousin Robert. Vince married the love of his life Doreen Andrews on August 24, 1968 spending over 52 years together. Doreen joined him during his lengthy career with the Royal Bank. This career took him and his family to communities all across Manitoba starting in 1964 in Roland as an accountant, progressing through the ranks in Langruth, Thompson, Melita, Lac du Bonnet, The Pas, on the road inspecting from Winnipeg, assistant manager in Flin Flon and Winkler, then managing in Deloraine, to area manager in Russell, Boissevain and finally retiring in Selkirk after 37 years with the bank. He was known to return to the wickets on busy days to assist with batching proof and supporting his staff. He was well liked and respected by colleagues and customers alike throughout his time with the bank.
Vince quickly became involved in every community he lived in, whether it was flipping pancakes at a Lions Pancake Breakfast, helping out with a United Church fundraiser dinner washing dishes, calling Bingo or announcing a local hockey game. His community mindedness is being carried on through his children with Jamie, Danny, Stacey and Wendy following in his volunteering ways. Vince always liked to be in the middle of the action. He enjoyed curling with his buddies or a golf game with anyone up for a challenge, even scoring 3 hole in ones and an Albatross over his years of golfing (sometimes up to 36 holes a day). Golfing was his retirement job, teeing off Monday to Friday with Lloyd and the rest of the 7am crew at his “office”. He passed on his love of sports to all of his children and loved watching hockey, Ringette, volleyball, softball or football games supporting his kids and grandkids, usually providing the loudest cheers in the building and travelling all over Western Canada to catch a game including several provincial championships. He later loved watching the kids or grandkids hit a long drive, sink a tricky putt or spot any balls that went OB. He loved talking hockey and football with Wendy even though they may have had disagreements on how effective certain players were preforming. In his later years he enjoyed playing pool and shuffle at the Active Living Centre.
Vince and Doreen retired to Carman in 2004 where they built a home and enjoyed being closer to family. Vince loved travelling, spending winters snow-birding for 10 years in Texas with Doreen making many lasting friendships through their love of square and round dancing both across Manitoba and Texas. Vince and Doreen also travelled to Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Hawaii, cruising down the Rhine and in the Caribbean. Some of their favourite trips were those to visit Heather and family in Victoria or to Disney World, where he tried out any roller coasters that his grandkids were up for, and many a road trip where he would even share the driving responsibilities with Stacey or Danny.
As a young family, they enjoyed camping with the Bakers’ and then in later years joining the kids and their families for camping trips to Alberta and BC. Vince treated his children’s partners as if they were his own children, developing special relationships with Rene, Tammy, Lori and Danny. He loved family get togethers that were full of good food, stories and laughter. Enjoying many “Happy hours” with family and friends up to a few days before he passed. His laughter and sense of humour would light up the room which helped lighten the mood in his final days. He was famous for his story telling abilities perhaps even including the occasional embellishment.
The last month and a half of Vince’s life was spent at home surrounded by family thanks to the support of his wife and kids and the amazing support of the Carman Homecare and Boundary Trails Palliative Care Programs. Vince was blessed with many special angels coming into his life during this time including Jeannie and Lloyd, nurses Melissa, Janine and Giselle and Dr. Woelk. It takes truly special individuals to provide this level of care and compassion.
A private family graveside service will be held at Roland Cemetery with a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Vince may be made to the Carman United Church or the Boundary Trails Palliative Care Program.
