Vera Furlong
1921-2020
It is with deep sorrow we announce the death of
Vera Mae Furlong(Thompson) on April 21,
2020.
Born in Little River, Cumberland Co. Nova Scotia she was
the 6th child and 4th daughter of the late Thomas S. Thompson
and Florence E Thompson.
She received her education in the country school at Little
River, Nova Scotia and graduated from the Provincial Normal
School at Truro. She taught school 34 years both in the county of
Cumberland and the Town of Amherst. She furthered her education by
attending summer sessions at Dalhousie and Mount Allison Universities
to stay current with new trends in education.
She married Douglas R Furlong on Sept 6, 1941 a
marriage of 71 years. A Past Chief of the
Pythian Sisters of Amherst and a Past Regent of the
Nomads. She was also affiliated with the Immanuel United Church in
Amherst.
She was an avid reader and loved to write poems for
friends and family for special occasions.
She leaves to mourn her passing, son Kencil Furlong
of Calgary. Daughter Grace (Gary) Warnica of Halifax, Daughter Faye
(Dereck) Jones of Toronto and a son Sheldon (Joyce) of Lower
Shinimicas. She also leaves behind ten Grandchildren, 14 Great
Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild. She is survived
by one sister Betty Wood of Oxford, N.S.
She was predeceased by her husband Douglas and sisters Jennie
Storey, Bertha Thom, Elaine Lynch, Hilda Hollis, Winnifred
McDonald and Irma Gordon. Also two brothers Kencil Thompson
and Norman Thompson.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at
Centennial Villa who were so caring
and helpful during our mothers time there. Also the
staff at Gables Lodge who were so compassionate and loving during
Moms final weeks.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of
the Jones Family Funeral Centre,
70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777). Due to Covid-19
there will be no visitation or funeral service. A graveside
service for immediate family will be held at a later
date.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Linden Hillside
Cemetery, Canadian Association of Psoriasis
Patients ( CAPP) or the charity of your
choice.
