Vera’s Obituary
The family of the late Vera D. Fofonoff, beloved wife of the late Wasil C. Fofonoff, announces her passing at the Canora Gateway Lodge on April 10, 2020, at the age of 99 years.
Vera was born January 18, 1921 to Metro and Polly (Veregin) Kabatoff in the Doukhobor Village of Kapustino, north of Veregin, SK. The family then purchased land and moved west of the village, where Vera attended Virden Valley School at the age of 7 years. She later furthered her education and achieved grade eight at Phoenix School, east of Canora, SK.
Another move to west of Buchanan, SK, led Vera to meeting Wasil Fofonoff, who she married in Buchanan, SK, on November 5, 1939. Vera and Wasil farmed north of Buchanan and raised their two daughters, Myrna and Irene. Vera worked very hard milking cows, raising chickens, and tended to a large garden. Cooking and baking were an integral part of her life and she excelled in baking cinnamon buns and her famous perahee and she graciously passed these skills on to her family.
A meticulous seamstress, Vera sewed clothing for herself, her daughters, and her grandchildren. Many hours were spent crocheting tablecloths and knitting afghans for her family to cherish forever.
Vera and Wasil retired in 1982 and enjoyed a bit of travelling, with California, USA, being their furthest venture. They moved to Buchanan where they initially rented a home and then purchased a house in 1990. Wasil passed away February 1992 and Vera remained in Buchanan until August 2013, when she relocated to Park Place in Canora, SK.
During her retirement, Vera made many trips (mostly by WestJet) to visit her granddaughter, Marina and family in Victoria, BC. Later it was to visit her granddaughter, Christina and family, and Myrna and Dieter in Campbell River, BC. She deeply loved her family and greatly enjoyed spending time with them.
In October 2018, Vera became a resident of the Canora Gateway Lodge, where she continued to reside until her passing on April 10, 2020. She will be dearly loved by all who knew and loved her.
Vera is predeceased by her husband, Wasil; parents, Metro and Polly; brothers, Bill and John; sister, Polly; sister-in-law, Ruby; and her niece, Diane.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Myrna (Dieter) and Irene (Sergey); grandchildren: Marina (Ralph), Christina (Rob), Vincent (Jackie), and Dwayne; great grandchildren: Dieter, Sabrine (Mikkel), Katerina, Martina, Landyn, Taylor, and Robin; great-great grandchildren, Finnley and Lucca; and her sister, Phyllis (Ed); as well as numerous nieces, a nephew and extended family and friends.
In Vera’s honour, a Private Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2020, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, with Walter Ostoforoff of the Canora Doukhobor Society officiating. Interment will follow in the Canora Cemetery.
