Ursula (Schroeder) Loewen was born in Czastkow, Poland on September 26, 1934.
Like so many families of that era living in Europe, the onset of World War II in 1939 resulted in much hardship for the family. Ursula and her family were refugees for much of the war, moving from village to village to avoid the advance of one army or another, and living with the constant uncertainty of trying to survive the war.
After the war, Ursula’s family immigrated to Canada by ship when she was 14 with the hope of rebuilding their lives in a new country.
They settled in Yarrow, BC, late in 1949. Ursula was able to continue her education and learn English after arriving in Canada, preparing her for her first job in Vancouver as a housemaid/nanny.
It was during this time that she met and married Jakob Loewen, who was also a new citizen of Yarrow recently having arrived from the Ukraine. They were married on September 6, 1953.
Jake and Ursula were blessed with 4 children. Edith in 1954, Judy in 1957, Krista in 1959 and David in 1964. Ursula worked tirelessly to make a comfortable home as her family grew. Her home was always open to visitors, and there was always a warm, delicious meal waiting for anyone who came through the door.
Ursula was actively involved in the church, participating in church services, serving the community, and singing in the church choir as well as a group called the Mennonettes. She served in this capacity almost her entire adult life until recent years as her strength and health failed.
Relationships were important to Ursula and she fostered and maintained many strong relationships through the years. She was blessed with many strong connections with family and friends.
In 2019, Ursula moved to Tabor Home, when she could no longer take care of herself. Her illness progressed and she steadily weakened. In addition, Ursula was more recently afflicted with COVID 19. She passed into the presence of her Lord within 2 weeks of diagnosis of the virus. Despite her illness, she received incredible love, care, and support from the nursing and medical staff of Tabor Home. The family will always be grateful to the committed and courageous staff of Tabor Home for caring for our Mom and “Omi” so well.
Ursula passed away in the early hours of Nov 13th. She was predeceased by her eldest daughter, Edith in 1983 and her beloved husband Jake in 2011. She will be deeply missed by her family. She is survived by her children; Judy (Joseph), Krista (David), and David (Karen), grandchildren; Maria (Jonathan), Joshua (Amanda), Michael, Mark (Sheri), Kevin (Morgan), Scott (Stephanie), Andrew, Jessica, & Zachary, great-grandchildren, Jakob, Jack, Joey, Max, Rosie, Rebecka, Natalie, Isla, and Logan.
While the family deeply grieve that Mom is no longer with us, we know and rejoice that she is now free of illness, and celebrating her new life.
The family wishes to thank all who shared their prayers and kind thoughts for the family during this time. Your love has made a lasting impact on this family and we want to say “THANK YOU!!
