The Venerable Wayne Carney
(June 5th, 1952 – August 10th, 2020)
Richard Wayne Carney (Wayne) was born and raised in Chatham, Ontario attending McKeough School and Chatham Collegiate Institute (CCI) before going on to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Toronto. He taught Primary school in Toronto and then received a Master of Divinity from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland in 1984. Wayne was ordained as a Deacon in 1984 and Priest in 1985. He served as Curate, Rector and Associate Priest in the Diocese of Toronto 1984 – 1995. In 1995, he became the Rector of Clonfert Group of Parishes until 2002. Subsequently, he became Archdeacon of Killaloe & Clonfert, Ireland in 2002 and Rector of Birr Group of Parishes, Ireland in 2003 and served in these roles until the time of his death. Wayne was the son of the late Edward John (1966) and Kathleen (nee Hackett) (1971). He married Norma Jean Robertson in 1973 and has two children, Kathleen (William) Landin, of Britney, France and Brian (Clodagh) Carney, of Chatham, Ontario. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Owen, Lucien and Blaise Landin and Eirin and Sean Carney. Wayne is survived by brothers Robert (Bob) of Chamcook, New Brunswick and Edward (Ed) of Chatham. Predeceased by brothers, Fredrick and James. The funeral will be held on Friday August 14th, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Limerick, Ireland. He will be cremated and have his ashes brought to Canada and be laid to rest in Chatham at a date to be determined.
