Sylvia Anne Coccia (August 29 1933, March 14 2020)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia
Coccia (née Will) after bouts with stroke finally took her from us
at the age of 86. She was pre-deceased by her father Alex,
mother Mona, and brothers Bud and Doug, and is survived by
sisters Marlene and Vicky.
She leaves behind her sons Donnie (and wife Hetty), Tony (and
wife Lorna), Rick (and wife Laura) and David (and wife
Conchita), grandchildren Marlow, Christopher, Melissa,
Christian and Stephanie, and great-granddaughter Hannah.
Lastly, she leaves her ever-loving husband of 65 years, Donald,
with a most heavy heart. Their devotion to one another and to
their family is the pillar on which we all now lean in our grief.
Like her father Alex, Sylvia had an abiding affection for working
people and a love of reading, which informed her keen interest in
the wider world, and the city of her birth, Vancouver. A simple
bus trip downtown was always a pleasure for her, whether it was
to shop and have lunch, or to just amble into Stanley Park and
stroll the seawall. Though she and Don travelled widely over the
years, Vancouver was truly her home.
Among her other great pleasures were movies old and new, and
music, especially that of her Scottish heritage. She loved plants
and flowers, and like her mother Mona, she cultivated something
of an interest in folk remedies.
Together Sylvia and Don lived a rich life, one that saw a
beautiful courtship, the raising of a loving family, the
companionship of close friends, and for many years the pleasure
of seeing the world. Most enjoyable of their travels were the
many visits with relatives in Italy that forged an enduring family
connection, the longstanding annual vacations in Puerto Vallarta
that also happily came to include relatives in Mexico, and
perhaps most precious, their holidays spent in Sylvia’s beloved
Scotland, and the Maritime provinces of Canada.
Sylvia spent her final days surrounded by loved ones.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Care
Team and nursing staff on ward 7C of VGH’s Blackmore
Pavillion for the guidance and patience shown in caring for our
beloved.
A Celebration of Life will follow at a date yet to be announced.
