Stella Shewchuk 2020

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Stella Sylvia Shewchuk, of St. Albert, AB, on Saturday Sept. 19th at the age of 77 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 54 years, William J. Shewchuk and her surviving daughter Laura K. Shewchuk and Laura’s fiancé James D. Angrove, as well as many family members and an abundance of friends. She was preceded by her daughter Sherry Lynn Shewchuk and her parents Fred and Olga Hryniuk.
Stella grew up in Prud’homme, Sask. where her mother and father owned a hotel. She was the third child of five. Stella became inspired to be a teacher by 9 years old and quickly accomplished her dream soon after high school. Her ambition of teaching in a one room country school was her first job followed by teaching in Calgary. Stella also aspired to move and teach in Uranium City, Sask. She met the love of her life Bill Shewchuk in Saskatoon and after they were married, they moved to Uranium City in 1966. Their two daughters were born, Laura and Sherry, but unfortunately Sherry passed away in 1974 of Leukemia, bringing the family to Edmonton, AB. In 1979, they moved to St. Albert, AB. where they remained. Stella’s passion for teaching, especially kindergarten, did not end when she retired. She then volunteered with Star Literacy to help adults learn to read and better their English. During her retirement she also kept extremely busy volunteering in the community with the St. Albert Catholic Church, CWL, The Arden Theatre and other organizations. Bill and Stella grew more and more in love over the years and “the love birds” just celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. Stella captured everyone’s lives through her camera and then went on to document the Hryniuk family and Shewchuk family’s genealogy. She will live in everyone’s hearts through her love for teaching, taking care of others, caring for Bill and Laura and her hard work that leaves all the families she belonged to with extensive history books.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday September 28th at the St. Albert Catholic Church, 7 Saint Vital Ave, St. Albert. Please come half an hour early in order to sign in. This will be followed by a reception in Edmonton at the Chateau Louis Hotel at 11727 Kingsway Ave NW.
