Obituary
Stanley Zaluski, late of Weyburn, SK passed away December 15, 2020 at the age of 89 years.
He was predeceased by his parents: Zygmont and Stefania Zaluski and his son-in-law, Dan Sidloski.
Stan is survived by his wife, Edith Zaluski; his children: daughters, Colette Zaluski, Adrienne Sidloski and her family: Natalie (Thomas) Bazin and their daughters [Wren and Farris], Erin Sidloski (Alik Karimov), Michaela Sidloski (Marissa Pirlot) and Benjamin Sidloski (Uma Doucette), son Gerard (Mayda) Zaluski and their family: Alexandra Zaluski, Dylan Zaluski (Sierra Mann) and Mitchell (Naomi) Zaluski and son Stephen Zaluski.
Stan was born in Tisdale and grew up on his parents’ homestead near Mistatim, in north-central Saskatchewan. His parents, Stefania and Zygmont, arrived from Poland in the late 1920s and eked out the difficult living of immigrant homesteaders.
After a lonely childhood, Stan attended high school at St. Joseph’s College in Yorkton, where he thrived. After graduation, he enrolled in teacher’s college and then began his career teaching in a one-room school. He soon transferred to the high school in Marsden, where he met Edith. They married in 1959. In 1966, they moved to Weyburn with their young family, where Stan joined the staff of Weyburn Collegiate Institute (later Weyburn Comprehensive School). After a brief period teaching math and geography, Stan became the school’s first guidance counsellor, a position he remained in until he retired in 1988.
Stan was a dedicated teacher and counsellor who cared deeply for his students. With his understanding nature, empathy and patience, he made particular connections with those who struggled. Stan approached his work with dedication and a deep sense of professionalism.
Stan lived a life of service to others, starting with his dear Edith, who he walked beside to his last day. He was a caring and concerned father, and took particular delight in his grandchildren. He embraced those who joined the family, and took great joy in its growth.
Stan was a man of deep faith, whose beliefs guided his daily actions and his commitment to love and serve. He was an excellent listener, endlessly generous with his time and ear, a friend to all, and a supporter of numerous charities.
With Edith’s decline and entry into long-term care in 2018, Stan adapted to the significant changes in his life with courage, resilience and characteristic selflessness. Stan lived the Beatitudes, and sought to leave the world better than he found it. He succeeded in both endeavours.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Stan will be held at a later date.
Family and friends who wish to make a donation in Stan’s memory can do so either to Tatagwa View Care Home, Box 2003, Souris Valley Road, Weyburn, SK S4H 2Z9, or to a charity of their choice.
