Stanley “Shots”‘s Obituary
Stanley James Mercer A.K.A. “SHOTS” died at the age of 75. Not before he got to see the NHL and his Pittsburg Penguins play again while eating some fresh fried pickerel.
The way he died is just like he lived. He wrote his own rules. He fought authority and paved his own way. If you said he couldn’t do it, he would make sure he did.
Most people thought he was crazy for scaring the heck out of people underground. And sometimes he found himself in hot water for that, but that is how he was a jokester, prankster and you better be on your toes when he was around.
Sometimes we wonder if he should have been on Sirius XM radio howling like a wolf to his 50’s and 60’s tunes. His handle would have been “Wolfman Stan”.
In his early days, you could find him out on the golf course, one heck of a golfer and he would always say “That’s poetry in motion” when he hit a nice drive down the middle of the fairway or won a 6 hole carry over.
After he retired from Campbell Mine, he found a love for driving around and treating his canine friends. He finally got the car of his dreams, a Cadillac. If you got to ride shotgun with him you were pretty damn lucky because you were in for the long haul. He would go out of his way to make sure you got a ride from point A to B.
Whether it was his moose hunting story, wicked slap shot in hockey, the way he drank his whiskey or the amount of height he gained in one year, we will never really know how he got that nickname “SHOTS”.
Of all the people he touched in his life, his most proud achievement is his wife and kids. He was supported and loved right to the very end.
Whiskey and beer companies are devastated by the loss of Stanley J. Mercer.
He will be loving remembered by his wife Denise of 47 years, children Jay (Brandie) Mercer, Gregory (Penny) Mercer, Holly (Dean) Mercer, grandchildren Dayton Mercer, Trinity Mercer and Brianna Andrusky, siblings Margaret (Gerry- Deceased) Gregoire- Nanimo, BC, Frank Mercer- Deceased- Red Deer, AB, Ada (Don) Acton- Victoria, BC, Barney- Deceased (Doreen) Mercer- Atikokan, ON, Desta (Bruce- Deceased) Schlott- Salmo, BC, Chi Mercer- Red Deer, AB, John (Doris- Deceased) Mercer- Red Deer, AB, Howard (Cathy) Mercer- Castlegar, BC, Phyllis (Dave) Ward- Calgary, AB, Harvey Mercer- Red Deer, AB as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also predeceased by father Percy Mercer and Mother Maggie Mercer.
As per his wish’s cremation has taken place and a private family celebration of life and interment will be held in the Balmertown Columbarium.
