Stanley Porter
1923-2020
Stanley Vernon Porter, 97, of Pictou and formerly
Abercrombie, passed away peacefully in the Northumberland Veterans
Unit July 24th.
A graduate of New Glasgow High School, he served as an
electrician in the RCAF, worked as a carpenter for Higgins
Construction, an estimator for Maritime Steel, and retired from Pictou
Regional Vocational School where he taught carpentry. A member of
Trinity United Church where he served on the Board of Stewards, he was
actively involved in Boy Scouts, the Abercrombie Fire Department,
Abercrombie Community Centre, and LORDA. A talented woodworker,
cabinet maker and artist, Stan was a master of wordplay and
enthusiastic traveller.
Born in New Glasgow to the late Guilford and Ella May
(Tupper) Porter, he was the last surviving member of his immediate
family. He was predeceased by daughter, Lori Mae, and his siblings,
Ted (Belle), Albert (Laura), Winnie, Beth (Walton) Clarke, Ernie
(Terry), Avard (Greta), Sheldon (Dot), Earl (Helen), and Jessie Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, “Dollie”
Gerry (Keddy); their daughter, Ruth (Sandy) Mackay, and their
children, Jonathan, Erin (Isaac Thompson), Alastair, and Alison (Tim
Malek); and son, Ernie (Jane) Porter, and their children, John and Ted
(Rachel Odgers), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Heartfelt gratitude is extended to
“comrades”, staff, and volunteers of the
Northumberland Veterans Unit for the cozy bunk, warm companionship and
kindly care provided over the past eleven years. Stan treasured a vast
extended family and circle of friends, reflecting recently,
“I’ve led a good life and I credit the people in
it.”
Memorial acknowledgement may be made through a donation in
support of NSCC Pictou Campus Urgent Aid Fund, the Northumberland
Veterans Unit Comfort Fund, or another kindness
extended.
Due to public health concerns, a private family graveside
committal will be held, with a Celebration of Life at a future
date.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Stanley Porter 19232020..
