Shirley Bridger 1951 2020

Obituary of Shirley Bridger
Shirley passed away on October 21, 2020, in Grand Falls-Windsor, after a brief battle with cancer, at the age of 69. Shirley retired after a long and enjoyable career as an elementary school teacher (she was perfect for that job). Shirley leaves behind her husband of 46 years Wilson Bridger, her sons Byron (wife Catherine) and Blair (wife Laura), and her precious grandchildren Gavin and Charlotte (Byron) and Emma and Lucy (Blair), who were the absolute joys of her life! In addition to her immediate family, Shirley is survived by her mother Mildred, siblings Fred (Daphney), Doug (Lynn), Marie (Glen), Sharon (Ray), Barb (Ken), Ken, Boyd (Darlene), and Kim, and a very large circle of friends. She is predeceased by her father Frederick.
Shirley was a pillar of her community, a very active member of her church, and renowned for her tireless efforts in support of both. In her church, she served on the board of management as well as the clerk of session; she was a member of the United Church Women (UCW), the UCW Outreach program, the church choir, the Canadian Girls In Training, and the church fellowship group; and she was a leader with Explorers. In support of her community, she was actively involved in the Kinettes and the Women’s Institute; she was a World Day of Prayer leader and a member of the Newfoundland Rug Hooking Guild; and she supported too many charity initiatives to list. Shirley was the first person to be called upon whenever there was a cause to support and was always one of the first people to show up to lend a helping hand.
Pastor James Martin-Carter will conduct a private celebration of life service at the Trinity United Church in Botwood, Newfoundland and Labrador, on Tuesday, October 27. In lieu of flowers, donations are gracefully accepted in support of the Canadian Cancer Society or the Trinity United Church.

  1. Wilson, my sincere condolence to you and your family on Shirley’s death. I remember that she was such a gentle and sincere person. She was a wonderful teacher and her volunteer work speaks to the kind of person she was. She will be missed in the whole community, but by her family and close friends most of all.
