Khera, Santosh (Tosh) 1935-2020 – On June 18, 2020, we said goodbye to the wonderful Santosh (Tosh) Khera, who passed away suddenly in Kingston at age 84. Tosh was born in Jhelum, India in 1935, and following Partition left for Amritsar and, eventually, Delhi. On June 5, 1958 she married Yoginder (Yogi) Khera and together they had two children, Nutan and Anil. In 1969, the family immigrated to Canada, first to Belleville and then Kingston, where Tosh lived many happy years.
Tosh’s generosity knew no bounds. She loved fiercely and believed in giving back to the community, from volunteering in nursing homes to caring for people with special needs. Her outlook on life was enviable; whether she was at home listening to Shabads, cruising the Thousand Islands or out at a friend’s party, she had a deep gratitude for what life had given her. She cherished a close network from her beloved Gurdwara, where she spent many Sundays in recent years, and the lifelong relationships she had in the Kingston Indian community.
Tosh never stopped making friends. It was not unheard of for her to meet someone while out running errands, and invite them for chai or a meal on the spot. To be her friend or family also meant you had inside access to the best Indian home cooking one could imagine. She was happiest when feeding the people she loved, and they were happiest too. Tosh was full of life, and life felt full when you were with her.
Tosh is preceded in death by her husband, Yoginder Khera, and is survived by her children Nutan “Bunty” Brown (Jack Brown) and Anil “Unu” Khera (Shelley McEwen), as well as her grandchildren Alexis “Baagie” Brown (Corey Black), Cassie Brown, Sky McEwen (Jeremy Fuller), Lake Khera (Maria Garcia Rodriguez) and Wesley Brown. She was a loving and adored auntie, sister-in-law and friend to many in Canada and India, who all will miss her dearly.
Her family is very appreciative to the SMILE program staff, who supported Tosh’s life in numerous ways, as well as the ICU staff at KGH who showed great care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Kingston Sikh Cultural Association or a charity of your choice.
“Love people more than things” – a magnet in Tosh’s kitchen, and the epitome of her spirit.
