Obituary of Samuel Gladstone Smith
SMITH: Dr. Samuel Gladstone –
A resident of London, formerly of Chatham, Dr. Samuel Gladstone Smith passed away at Dearness Home in London on Thursday, January 30, 2020 in his 86th year.
Born in Harwich Township, Sam was the son of the late Gladstone and Irene (nee Scoyne) Smith.
Beloved husband of the late Jean Elizabeth Smith (nee Ramsdale, 2002).
Loving father of Taire Roke of Kitchener, Bryan Smith (Jenny) of Toronto and Patty Smith of London.
Proud grandfather of Kaity, Rachel, Alexandra, Eric, Brennan and Rebecca.
Dear brother of the late James Smith (Ruth Ann) of Chatham, the late Harry Smith (Carol) of Blenheim, Betty Ann and Jim Martin of Windsor and the late Geraldine and Bob Wyman of Florida.
Also missed by nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.
Sam graduated from Queen’s University in 1959, becoming a Medical Doctor in 1965 with a fellowship in Anesthesia. He worked at St. Joseph’s and Public General Hospital in Chatham from 1965 – 1998. When not at work, Sam enjoyed his memberships at Maple City Golf Course and the Chatham Granite Club and loved playing bridge with friends.
Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham on Sunday, February 2, 2020 from 12:00 pm until the Celebration of Sam’s Life at 2:00 pm. Cremation has taken place with a private family interment to be held at Maple Leaf Cemetery at a later date.
Donations made in memory of Sam to the Foundation of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (Palliative Care or Intensive Care) would be appreciated.
