Sammy’s Obituary
MacDonald, Leo Samuel “Sammy” – 83, Ret. Chief of Police, Springhill, passed away Sunday, December 27th, 2020. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Leo and Anna Mae (Terris) MacDonald. Sammy began his working career at the Springhill coal mines at a young age He then attended vocational school in Halifax and received his machinist certificate. He later joined the Springhill Police Force in 1958 as a Constable and eventually followed in his father Leo’s footsteps and became Chief of Police. Sammy’s son, Paul would also join the Springhill Police Force combining for over 119 years of police service to the town of Springhill by three generations of the MacDonald family. He was very proud of his grandson, Brandon, for following in the family tradition as being a peace officer for Corrections Canada. Sammy was very community focused over the years serving on many local and professional committees and boards, always with the goal of serving his community. Sammy also had a great love for his family, especially his grandchildren and enjoying time spent at Fountain Lake and the cottage in Pugwash. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Betty Fisher; son, Paul (Susan); daughter, Lisa (Andy) MacDonald Miller, both of Springhill; grandchildren, Brandon MacDonald; Katelynn and Dawson Gallagher; Danielle Miller; two great-grandchildren; brother, Roderick (Timble), Oxford; sisters, Virginia McCormick, Springhill; Elizabeth (Bobby) Gillis, Hammonds Plains; son-in-law, Ted Gallagher, Springhill. He was predeceased by daughter, Jennifer Leah Gallagher; brother-in-law, Roger McCormick. The family would like to thank All Saints Springhill Hospital and Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre for their care and compassion, and VON and Meals of Wheels from High Crest Nursing Home for the services they provided. The family is very appreciative for all of the visits, phone calls and messages, and grateful to the entire community for their support at this difficult time. In keeping with Sammy’s wishes there will be no funeral service. Arrangements are in the care of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Oxford (902-447-2930). Donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Kidney Foundation of Canada or Diabetes Canada.
