Catherine Margaret (Ruby) LaRose passed away peacefully on November 19, 2020 at Moosomin Integrated Care Home. She was born in her family home on March 6, 1923 in Regina SK. She was predeceased by her parents, William Lumsden Murray from Falkirk, Scotland and Jean Stewart Sugden Bryce from Bannochburn, Scotland. Her parents immigrated to Canada with their parents in 1906, and settled at St. Andrew’s Scottish Settlement three and a half miles SW of Wapella, SK. The Settlement was established in 1883 and the Settlers were known as the Lady Gordon Cathcart Settlers. William and Jean were married in 1907 and moved to a farm nearby Wapella where Ruby grew up.
From an early age, Ruby became very independent, starting her own trap line in her teens and looked after her nephew from a young age. She had a great love of all animals and used to ride horseback and learned trick riding, including riding while standing up and riding bareback side saddle. She later met her partner, Harry Boardman, who farmed nearby. Ruby began cooking for the hired men and never knew how many were coming for dinner, but no man was ever left hungry. They lived on the farm with 500 cattle, 100 horses and without any power or running water until the early 1970’s and then moved to Moosomin, SK. After Harry’s passing, she later met and married Robert LaRose and they travelled North America together for 20 memorable years. Upon his passing, Ruby lived in her own home until the age of 97 and then moved to the Wawota Care Home for 1 month then to Moosomin Integrated Care Home for the last two weeks of her fulfilling life.
Ruby was also predeceased by her brother, William (Verena) from Regina, and Allan (Marguerite) from Rimby, AB. She’s survived by many nieces and nephews and their families. Ruby has been cremated and a memorial will be held in the spring of 2021 and will take place in Wapella Cemetery. A lunch will later be served at the Legion in Moosomin. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, 350 Michael Cowpland Drive Kanata, Ontario K2M 2W1 or a charity of your choosing.
The Clock of Life
The clock of life is wound but once
And no man has the power
To tell just when the hand will stop
At late or early hour
Now is the only time you own
Live, love and toil with a will,
Place no faith in tomorrow,
For the clock may then be still.
