Robert “Wilf” Wilfred Sweeney
1928 – 2020
Robert Wilfred Sweeney of Castlegar, BC died peacefully on Friday, September 19, 2020 at the age of 92. Wilf was born September 6, 1928 in Dryden, Ontario, the youngest son of Lillian and Bob Sweeney.
He graduated U. of T. with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1952 and married Doris Race the same year. They started their family in Trois-Rivières, Quebec and moved to Castlegar in 1960 where Wilf worked as a project engineer on construction of the Celgar Pulp Mill. He retired in 1993 as general manager after directing the expansion and start up of the new mill. Wilf enjoyed golfing, woodworking, reading, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family and close friends. He was active in the Castlegar Rotary Club, serving as club president, fundraising, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a man of integrity with a great sense of humour and he will be fondly remembered by those who knew him.
Wilf was predeceased by Doris, his wife of 56 years, their son, Dallas, his sister Leone, and his son in-law, Jack. He is survived by his sons Pat (Linda) and Jon (Lindsey), daughter Marilyn, grandchildren Nicole, Dylan, Maggie (Jim), and Helen (Adam), great-grandchildren Lily, Maisie, Mayra, and Edward, sister Irene, sister in-law Merle, brother in-law Davy, nieces and nephews and extended family.
By Wilf’s request, there will be no funeral. Memorial donations may be made in Wilf’s name to Rotary International or the charity of your choice.
