Robert William Smerchansky
With heavy hearts we announce that Robert William Smerchansky, age 76, passed away suddenly in the afternoon of Saturday, September 12, outside on a beautiful fall day. We are comforted knowing he died enjoying puttering in the yard along-side his beloved wife Gloria of 54 years. Additionally, he leaves to mourn, his son Steven, daughter, Audrey (Jeff) along with grandchildren Louisa, Nathaniel and Joseph, sister-in-law Ruth, nieces and nephews, and cousins and friends. He is predeceased by brother, Ted and parents Adam and Marie. Born June 14, 1944, Robert grew up in Winnipeg, attending Tec-Voc High School. He lived his adult life in the municipality of Springfield, married to the woman he would tell his children was his soul mate, Gloria, on Aug 6, 1966.
Despite hearing loss, he owned and operated Transcona Lawn Service through retirement. He liked nothing better than to hop on the tractor to take care of the lawn. Robert was a very enthusiastic person and a lover of people. Forever the optimist, he had a zest for life that was to be admired. Playing cribbage and blackjack were among his favorite past-times. He had a love of traveling and took immense pleasure in planning and anticipating trips. Collecting seashells and amassing museum quality specimens was a hobby that took over his basement; he loved sharing his collection with others. His grandchildren have memories vacationing with Grandma and Grandpa in Sanibel Island, Florida and that he was ‘a really good sharer’ and ‘very welcoming’. Dad thoroughly enjoyed his weekly social time at Kin Place with The Sunrisers in Oakbank – special thanks to Lisa and Erika! The family wishes to thank Dr. Wiebe for his care of Robert over the years. Thanking the paramedics for their efforts to revive Dad and empathy shown to Mom.
Per Robert’s wishes, cremation has taken place, with no funeral or memorial services. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba at 200-6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 0K6 in Robert’s memory.
We will forever miss you and keep you in our hearts, knowing you loved us, encouraged us and wanted the best for us.
