Obituary
Robert Van Sickle was a well known and loved personality in the Courtenay area. He grew up in London, Ontario and worked for Bell Telephone until deciding in 1988 to join friends on the Island. Upon immediately enjoying Island life and it’s environment, Skid soon made it his home. He lived in Royston for awhile and could be often seen riding his beloved Harley on the way to enjoy the company of friends at the FBI or the Highwayman.
After a few years of various jobs, including bartending at the FBI (some good stories to laugh with him), Skid spent a number of years as a resident manager of the Fanny Bay Turbo station and convenience store until he retired a few years ago. Patrons became friends as Skid was always a source of smiles and chuckles. He was very proud of being a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Bowser.
Skid was kind, generous and caring of others. He loved animals and was a fan of both dogs and cats, particularly Mark and Row. He was known for always speaking first to a strange dog before acknowledging it’s owner!
Robert is survived by his mother Judy, brother Brian and fiancé Kim, sister Lisa and brother-in-law Paul Smith, and niece Shelby. He is predeceased by his father Uel.
His illness was not Covid related but our family and his friends were impacted by this virus nevertheless. We would like to thank the staff of North Island Hospital Comox Valley for their care and kindness in this trying time. He knew he was loved. In light of the current situation, a private family memorial is planned in Ontario.
A special thank you from our family to Skid’s friend, Mary Robertson of Fanny Bay, for helping us to deal with his hospital time and his loss.
Rest in peace Rob.
