Robert ‘Bob’ Alvin Mercer 1940 2020

Obituary of Robert ‘Bob’ Alvin Mercer
Robert (Bob) Alvin Mercer passed peacefully away at home in Pearson’s Peak with family on Monday, July 27, 2020, after a lengthy illness at the age of 80.
Bob was born on March 6, 1940 to Baxter and Susanna Mercer of Bishop’s Falls. He married Emma Lane from Grand Falls on April 4, 1960.
Bob’s first job was at Butler’s Supermarket in Bishop’s Falls. He then joined Green Lantern Wholesalers in Grand Falls where he was the manager until he retired.
Bob was a member of the Windsor Pentecostal Church where he was involved with many groups over the years including being a church usher and Sunday School teacher. Most recently, he was a member of the Men’s Bible Study Group and Men’s Fellowship. He was also a school board member and volunteered with Gideons International, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Exploits Disability Association. In the past few years, he co-facilitated Improving Health: My Way sessions offered by Central Health.
After he retired, one of Bob’s great joys was his daily coffee breaks with his friends. He was a late convert to the benefits of a vegan diet and loved to cook up his vegan recipes at home.
Bob loved the outdoors. Until he was no longer able, Bob loved to go moose hunting, rabbit catching and riding his quad. He especially enjoyed spending time with his dog, Princess, at his cabin by the river where he loved to welcome his friends for a chat and a cup of tea.
He was predeceased by his parents Baxter and Suzanna Mercer; brothers Eric, Wycliffe, Roland and Donald; sisters Maxine and Louise; sister-in-law Rowena; and brothers-in-law Reg, Neil and Albert.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 60 years, Emma; daughters Helen (Derek) Linfield, Vanessa (Dale) Oldford; Trudy (Vernon) Pearce; and grandchildren Scott (Libby) Oldford and Wynnry Kinden. Also left to mourn his sisters Joyce, Joan (Ron), Judy (Jim); sister-in-law Cavell; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; also Elizabeth (Jamie) Janes, Arthur Blake, Phillip Wheeler, and Janessa Bursey.
He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
A special thank you to the wonderful physicians and staff at Central Health who cared for Bob over the past four years.
Due to Covid-19 regulations, a private family viewing, service and burial will take place. Pastor Derek Sharon will conduct the funeral service at Hoskins Funeral Home followed by the burial at the Windsor Pentecostal Cemetery on Friday, July 31, 2020.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the South and Central Health Foundation www.schf.nl.ca/in-memoriam-giving/
or to Gideons International Canada gideons.ca/give-today.
