On Saturday August 15, 2020, Robert (Bob) Edward Browning passed away at age 81. Bob was born March 11, 1939 in Vancouver to Hilda and Frederick Browning, and attended high and technical schools there. He started working for Motorola and then began a 35-year long career with the B.C. Telephone Corporation. Bob and Sharon were married in 1964 and then followed Bob’s work initially to Hope, then Cranbrook, Williams Lake, and finally Nelson. They built a beautiful waterfront home on the West Arm where they raised two children. Bob enjoyed the lake lifestyle for over 40 years before the couple moved to Mill Street in 2016.
He had a passion for technology which was evidenced in both his career and hobbies. He was involved in the commissioning and maintenance of many of the remote radio telecommunications towers in the Kootenays in the 70’s and 80’s. He enjoyed the adventure of accessing and working in such extreme locations while helping advance modern communications for his community. In his leisure time, Bob enjoyed learning about and tinkering with personal computers.
Known for his quick wit, Bob was outgoing in company and enjoyed his Saturday outings to the Nelson Legion. After retirement, he was a volunteer streetcar conductor and they traveled extensively, especially enjoying Mexico and cruising.
Bob was predeceased by his older sister Mary. He is survived by his wife Sharon and his two children, Schon and Tara, as well as many cousins, nieces and a nephew. Special thanks are extended to Dr. Kelly Mieske and the third-floor nurses for their compassionate care during his hospital stay.
Due to present circumstances, no formal memorial is planned at this time.
