Obituary of Rita Sweet
February 12th, 1964 – September 19th, 2020
Rita Sweet at age 56 passed away on Saturday, September 19th, 2020 with her loving partner Pete by her side, after her courageous battle with cancer. Rita loved car shows, shopping, playing cards, scratch tickets, casinos and psychics. How she believed in psychics, four leaf clovers, rainbows and pots of gold. How she loved the holidays, Halloween, Christmas and New Years. She was always the host and organizing us all. Loving Syracuse, Amelisburg and Lake George Car Shows, she always had a love for classic vehicles so meeting Pete back in 1990 was the perfect match. Together for 30 years they shared a great love. She was a devoted mother to her son DJ. How she loved this boy. He was her everything. They did everything together as a family, Car shows, movies, vacations but importantly they ate dinner together every night at their kitchen table. How this lost family tradition meant everything to her. This was the one thing she wanted to get better for. How these boys banded together to help nurse my sister back to health. Like nobody making her water better than DJ. Rita had worked factory jobs for years but after finally getting laid off she said I need a career so she went back to school and landed on real estate and she finally found her passion. How she loved her work and her devoted ReMax Brighton colleagues. They too were a strong motivator for her to get well and back to work. She used this as fuel before and after treatments to get her through and she was fighter. If strength, love, passion and determination were needed to fight this disease Rita would live for 100 years. Facing every obstacle and set back with a strength and determination we all marvelled at. SHE WAS A WARRIOR. Oh and I can’t forget about Ted. How Rita loved this dog. He and her had quite the relationship. He never left her side. He was just the medicine she needed when she got her first diagnosis and together they made quite the pair. It’s sad to see him looking out the window waiting for his mom. How she loved her families always spending whatever time she could with all of us. How she loved seeing all the new additions to the families and how she looked forward to new ones to come. She loved being an Aunt. From 40 years old to 4 months she loved them all. Rita is survived by her loving family. Pete and DJ. She is predeceased by our parents Bill and Virginia Sweet of Trenton. She is the loving sister of Kathy (Terry) Roy, Bill (Kim) Sweet and Lori (Randy) Whaley, and is the loving sister-in-law to Dan Taft, Patsy (Jimmy) Dearing and Elaine Taft and Kevin Nazar (Trigg). Also survived by several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, and too many friends to name. She is gone for now but she will never be forgotten.
Soar free my beautiful sister and say Hi to everyone for us.
Until we meet again.
A drive by memorial was held in Rita’s honour on Saturday, September 26, 2020, from 2-4 p.m., in her subdivision.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Community Care Northumberland would be appreciated by the family.
