Obituary of Richard Cote
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Richard Cote. Richard passed away December 21, 2020 at the age of 88 years old. Born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and raised in Cote First Nation. He was predeceased by his parents Gordon Cote (Old man) and Maggie Keewatin (Cote); his brothers: Roderick Cote, Alex Cote and Charlie Cote; sisters: Jeanette Cote, Annie Keewatin (Nanaway) and Rose Irene Keshane; infant great-granddaughter Dakota Gordon-Buffalo; grandson Murray Zoe; son Bernard Ivan Whitehawk; brother in-law Clement Keshane; sister-in-law Erma Cote and auntie Stella Blackie (Granny) (Waywayseecappo F.N, MB). Richard is survived by his former spouses: Clara Munroe and Esther (Whitehawk) Monkman; biological siblings: Audrey Zoe (Pat), Marion Buckner (Don), Verne Ross, and Debra L. Cummins (Tony). Richard adored and loved all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, too numerous to mention them all. Sister in-law Veronica (Gail) Cote who helped to raise so many children. He is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends. Richard enjoyed playing bingo and saying hi to all his lady friends and placing bets on the horses. He was a strong believer in the cultural practices of ceremonies where he helped out many families that were in need of spiritual healing. That was one thing he never forgot to practice, including speaking his Saulteaux language. With his smile and humour, you cannot help but laugh along with him. He was so loved by so many including the surrounding Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Remember that smile and the stories Richard has shared with you and keep them in your hearts.
Visitation will be held at Andrychuk’s Funeral Home, 346 3rd street, Kamsack, SK on Sunday December 27, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The Traditional Service and Burial will be held at Cote First Nation on Monday, December 28, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. with Elder Francis Bird Officiating, along with a Drum Group.
