Richard Ruston 2020

It is with deep sadness that his family announces the passing of Richard (Rusty) Ruston at the age of 91. Rusty passed away peacefully at Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert, Alberta after a short illness with his son, Scott at his side. Rusty was born at Kelvington, SK and took great pride in the fact that he was neither born at home nor in a hospital. He was born in a Red Cross tent on the side of the road. He grew up on the family farm near Nut Mountain, SK greatly enjoying “life in the sticks” with his parents and siblings. He attended Glengariff School where he met the love of his life and future wife of 62 years, Hazel Althouse. Rusty spent a lengthy career (1948 – 1970) with the Canadian Military serving with the Royal Canadian Navy in the Korean War (HMCS Sioux) with tours in Europe, the Far East, South America, and the Caribbean as well as time at several bases and stations throughout Canada. Upon retirement from the military, Rusty worked for airline companies in Western and Northern Canada, finally settling in his beloved Saskatchewan helping Hazel with the yard and gardening, working for local farmers, voraciously reading, playing cards, and, most importantly, spending time with friends and family.
Throughout his life, Rusty dedicated time and energy to the various communities he called home. He was a founder, executive, and coach for minor baseball (and later softball), an active Lions’ Club member, a life-long member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and a Colonsay Seniors Centre executive.
Rusty was predeceased by his devoted wife, Hazel; son, Gregory; brother, John; and sisters, Eileen, Doreen, and Shirley. Rusty’s memory will continue to be cherished by his sons, Donald (Valerie), Brent (Della), Scott (Holly); and daughter, Lynn; as well as grandchildren, Gregory, Krista (Joey), Joshua, Jeremy (Christina), Nicholas (Jackie), Matthew (Leah), Marshall (Jenny), and Mitchell; and great-grandchildren, Jadzia, Amy, Koben and Emma.
A Celebration of Rusty’s Life will be held at a later date.
