Raymond John Schmidt
Dr. Raymond John Schmidt of Sherwood Park, Alberta passed away on January 26, 2020. Born in Calgary, Alberta on January 2, 1947, he was the son of the late William R, and Ruby M. Schmidt of Gleichen, Alberta. Raymond was raised in Gleichen and attended High School at the Bow Valley in Cluny, Alberta. In his formative years Raymond was an excellent student and athlete. He was an avid curler and volleyball player as well as an accomplished track and field star. In his senior year, Raymond placed first in the decathlon event at the Wheatland County annual track and field tournament. After high school he went on to the University of Alberta in Calgary where he received Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Economics and Education as well as a master of Arts degree in Education. A dedicated educator and coach, Raymond, Raymond worked as a high school Social Studies teacher and volleyball/curling coach in Standard, Alberta and later in Calgary. Deeply interested in the use of information technology for education, Raymond moved to Sherwood Park, Alberta in 1980 to work for the County of Strathcona managing their education resource center. In 1990, he received his PhD in Education from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Raymond loved to travel and spent most of his summers visiting relatives and friends in England as well as travelling throughout Europe. In the 1980’s Raymond presented at many education conferences around the world and served as the editor of the Alberta Teaches Association magazine. In 1988 he was stricken with an aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and in 1995 he was forced to retire from his job at the County of Strathcona due to the progression of the MS disease. His final years were greatly eased by the many dedicated caregivers and friends, especially his long-term friend, Dr. Kathryn Jones, all of whom did an excellent job attending to his needs.
