After a long and interesting life, Peter’s family announces his passing on January 23, 2020, at the age of 97.
Peter was born in Waltham, Lincolnshire, England to his architect father, Walter and his mother, Doris May (nee Joyce). He grew up with two brothers, Roy and Brian.
A terrific track and field runner, Peter also displayed an early aptitude for all things mechanical and electrical. He was a member of the Royal Air Force during WWII where he was a radio mechanic and later an instructor. His contributions during the war resulted in numerous medals and accolades.
After the war, Peter was posted to Canada where he met his bride-to-be, Elizabeth “Betty” Cairney. A man of many talents, Peter impressed Betty by performing as a concert pianist for the RAF in Edmonton. They were married in June of 1949 and enjoyed almost 70 years together.
Peter and Betty welcomed their only child, Barry “Wayne” in 1954. Their small family lived in Edmonton and enjoyed fishing, camping, a succession of small poodles, highland dancing and piping. Peter was a car enthusiast, he owned a multitude of vehicles but was most proud of his GTO.
Peter eventually settled into work with Edmonton Telephones where he supervised radio support to the police, fire and emergency services for the city. He enjoyed his work very much.
After his retirement in 1983, Peter and Betty happily spent many years travelling to Yuma, Arizona for the winters. They also participated in many events with Wayne’s family. A life-long learner and bright as a penny until his passing, Peter was creating YouTube videos and engrossed in computers well into his eighties.
Peter’s legacy lives on with daughter-in-law, Louise (nee Pelletier); grandson, Cameron of Victoria; granddaughter, Melissa (Sean) Bowie of Nanaimo; and great-grandchildren, Olivia and Grayson Bowie. Peter was predeceased by his beloved wife Betty in 2018 and son Wayne in 2019.
Peter’s family wishes to express gratitude to Bayshore Healthcare particularly Samantha, Jan Miguel, Michelle, Maricris, Monique, Meagan, Heather and Cindy: the Grey Nuns Hospital, Units 51 and 43; and his neighbours at Horizon Harbour who always kept an eye out for his well-being.
A Celebration of Peter’s life will take place at a later date.
