It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Paul George Martell, age 69 of Petit de Grat, who passed away peacefully on October 9th, 2020, at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston, after a lengthy but courageous battle with cancer. Born January 17th, 1951 in Arichat, he was the son of the late George Alexander and Alvina (Boudreau) Martell.
Paul grew up in Little Anse and moved to Petit de Grat after he got married to raise his family. And although he laid his head on his pillow in Petit de Grat every night, Little Anse was always home in his heart. As a young man, Paul started his career at Booth’s Fisheries as a fishmonger cutting and filleting fish. He continued to work there until a serious car accident forced him to leave his job. Paul later joined the Chronicle Herald team and became the dedicated delivery man that made sure the residents of Isle Madame in his assigned area had their newspaper to read and their flyers to browse through.
Paul was a man that didn’t need a lot of material things. What he cherished the most in life was the roots from which he came and his family. Paul enjoyed his long drives and the simple things in life, especially his sister Shirley’s cooking and the close bond they shared. Paul was very proud of his three children and four grandchildren. He was quick to shift a conversation to highlight all of their accomplishments thus far in life.
Paul was a dedicated Progressive Conservative supporter that had a passion for talking politics. He was an active member of the Isle Madame New Horizons Seniors Club. When he wasn’t at home or at his old homestead, Paul could be found at a friend’s house playing an intense game of cards, Scat and “Dame de pique” in particular.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Linda (Meunier), Petit de Grat; oldest son, Wesley (Terra) Martell and their children, Mattie and Chase, of Pomquet; only daughter, Kimberley (Timmy Clannon) Martell and her children, Neveah and Khalley, of Little Anse; youngest son, Courtney, at home; stepmother, Ethel Martell and her children, Alfred (Therese)Boudreau, Wayne (Therese) Boudreau, Howard Boudreau, Karen (Robert) Roach, Andrea (Albert) Landry; in-laws Violet LeBlanc, Arichat; and Helen (Jim) McLaren, Antigonish, as well as, many other special family and friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Martell; his stepsister, Nora (Thomas) Landry; and in-laws Leo & Jeannette Meunier and Evangeline & John Babin.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 12th, 2020 at Green’s Funeral Home at 507 Bernard St., Port Hawkesbury from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A private Funeral service will be held at Green’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 13th at 11 am with Rev. MacIsaac presiding. Cremation will follow with a private burial in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, West Arichat at a later date. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Green’s Funeral Home in Port Hawkesbury.
