Obituary for Patrick Joseph Pender
November 30, 1940 – September 20, 2020
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Patrick, 79, of Delta B.C.
Patrick was born on November 30, 1940 in Grace Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario to Matthew and Kathleen Pender (nee Ford). He was predeceased by both of his parents, his brother Laurence, and first born daughter Jennifer. He is survived and deeply mourned by his wife and the love of his life, Mary, daughter Meaghan Rice (Eric), son John and grandsons Augustus Nemeth and Ethan Rice. His first granddaughter is due to arrive in December 2020. Patrick was educated at St Patrick’s College, University of Ottawa and studied Meteorology with Transport Canada in Toronto. He spent 32 years of his life working for the federal government in the various manifestations of Environment Canada.
His first 12 years he worked as a weather forecaster at various locations across the country and then as a manager and senior executive culminating with his final position as Regional Director General for BC and Yukon. After retiring in 1994, he spent the next decade working as a consultant. Patrick is remembered with fondness and esteem by his former colleagues and friends made during his career, many of whom he maintained meaningful connections with over the years.
Throughout his life, Patrick was an avid sports enthusiast, enjoying baseball, hockey, curling and golf. He could always be counted on for a lively chat about sports, current affairs or tapped for some words of sage advice when needed. He enjoyed travel, especially cruising with Mary, and he loved visiting Italy and France. He thoroughly enjoyed a glass of red wine, especially Cabernet Sauvignon introduced to him by his daughter Jennifer. There was always a book or two that he was in the process of reading, and he loved to stay up to date on current events through various daily newspapers. His politics were liberal and while not religious, he had a profound interest in the spiritual. There will be no funeral, by request, but a good old fashioned Irish wake once it’s safe to gather with the many family and friends who miss him tremendously.
While Patrick’s sudden passing has been a great loss to his family, his kind spirit, warmth and wisdom will be with us always and we will forever cherish our beautiful memories made with him. The family encourage memories and stories to be shared below.
“And there we yet will meet, my bird, though far I go from you. Where in the light outpoured, my bird, are love and freedom too.”
– “Freedom”, George William Russell
