Patricia Paddy Martyn Polley Monday October 19th 2020

Patricia (Paddy) Martyn (1946-2020)
It is with sorrow that the family announces the passing of our wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend, Paddy Martyn. Paddy passed away peacefully on Monday, October 19th, 2020 at Pioneer Manor. She was the daughter of the late Agnes (Gus) and Peter Cooke Polley. Paddy leaves behind her husband and best friend of 46 years, Taras (Terry), sons Daniel (Emma, and grandson Jonah, in Australia), and Michael, in Sudbury. Paddy is the sister of John (Irene, in Bishop’s Mills), and Peter. She leaves her nephews and nieces and their families: Ben, Dan, Stephen, and Olena. Paddy enjoyed spending good times with her friend and former neigbour Karen Lindquist. Paddy will miss her dear pet Taffy.
Paddy was a schoolteacher who taught in Kingston, Belleville, North Bay, and Sudbury (Confederation Secondary School, Marymount College, and St. Charles College). Paddy was an excellent cook and the house was full of people on special occasions and holidays to celebrate friendship with a good meal. Paddy was very artistic and creative. She enjoyed learning new arts and crafts and sharing them with others. Paddy was a champion of the “underdog” and believed in fairness, no matter who or what the circumstance. She always gave 100 effort and expected everyone else to do the same.
Her failing health brought her to Pioneer Manor, where she has been a resident for the past 7 years. Although she did not want to be there, she did not flounder in sorrow or self-pity, but soon found her way and a new role within her new home. She participated in Arts and Crafts activities and in the last year became the President of the Residents Council at the Manor. Paddy worked closely with Lydia and Denise to engage the residents and make the Manor a better place.
Our family extends our heartfelt thanks to the many people who looked after Paddy. Thank you to the administrative staff, the girls in physiotherapy, and especially all the staff in Cedar Place. TO the kitchen staff, RNs, RPNs, and the PSWs; you took care of Paddy and all the other residents, sometimes under difficult conditions but always with humour and a friendly smile. Paddy got to know many of you very well and looked upon you as her friends – for that, the family is grateful.
Donations to the Ontario Lung Association or the Ukrainian Seniors’ Centre in Paddy’s memory would be kindly appreciated. Funeral Service in the R.J. Barnard Chapel, Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury, on Saturday, October 24th, 2020, at 11:30am. Interment in the Civic Memorial Cemetery. (Friends may gather in the chapel after 11am Saturday. Due to COVID-19 Pandemic directives, 80 people or fewer are permitted in the chapel.)
