Olga Jeanette Cummings
1937-2020
Olga Jeanette Cummings – 82, Truro. A kind, gentle,
quiet soul, left this earth on Wednesday, October 28,
2020. She is now free of pain and the debilitating disease of
Alzheimer’s. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late
Percy and Edith (Cruickshank) Taylor, Harmony Road, Salmon
River.
There are not enough words to describe what an amazing mother
we were blessed with. Selfless and giving, Mom always put others’
needs before her own. The devotion to her family and those she loved
was immeasurable. She was a woman so deeply loved by her family and
anyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Mom had
an aura about her that made people feel welcome and at
ease. She had a natural love for children and was able to get
down on their level – building igloos, sand castles,
flying kites, watching movies, playing games; anything they
wanted to do she was a participant!
A great listener, Mom also loved to talk. However,
the last several years Alzheimer’s disease deprived her of
the ability to verbally communicate. She taught us many life
lessons. She chose to have a positive attitude, and focused
on kindness. Making do with what you have, Mom was always so
grateful for the simple things in life – a sunny day, stargazing, a
crackling fire and a glass of wine – are just a few. Other pleasures
in her life were maintaining a meticulous house, long walks with our
father, music, dancing, skating, bowling, playing the piano, puzzles,
spending time with her family and the solitude of their cottage in
Five Houses. She was a great sport and was good at anything she took
part in.
Our mother had an extraordinary, innovative and creative
mind. She had amazing talents and there was nothing she couldn’t do;
knitting, sewing, baking and decorating her home. Mom was a
woman well ahead of her time, making her own “earth bags”
well before cloth shopping bags were even thought of! A
“Mrs. Fix-It”, she was able to get extended use out of items
using GOOP and Duct Tape.
Mom taught us to persevere through anything she undertook,
including her cruel disease.
A giver all her life, Mom was the recipient of exceptional
private care for seven years in her own home. These angels
taught us what true love and compassion were all about. (You know who
you are.)
We are forever grateful that Mom’s beautiful smile and loving
brown eyes shone bright through the fog of her disease.
