Obituary of Olaf Ansgar Melvie
Dr. Olaf Melvie, of Calgary, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2020 at the age of 92 years.
Olaf was the third child born to Inge (nius) and Carrie Mjelve on the farm near Hay Lakes, Alberta. His father, who emigrated from Norway to Canada, died when Olaf was only two years old, and his mother never remarried. He had a country childhood in Hay Lakes and Camrose, skiing to school with his brothers and sister.
Besides helping on the farm until well into his twenties, he worked different jobs including battery operator for an oil company and teaching at the country school. He then completed his doctor of medicine at the University of Alberta, which is where he met his wife Yvonne. They were married in 1963. They lived a short time in Melfort, Saskatchewan and then moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1965. They had three children, Vivien, Mark and Annette. Always a hard worker, he continued to practice medicine until his late 70’s, when he most enjoyed assisting with surgery.
Olaf was a quiet and contemplative person who found solace in the beauty of nature. He was an avid cross country skier, enjoyed the challenge of golf and curling, and rode his bike everywhere. He also loved to read and play hymns, and much preferred a simple life.
Olaf is lovingly remembered by his wife Yvonne; daughter Vivien (Kevin) Evans and children Madison (Deryk) and Eric; son Mark and children Amy, Matt, and Melissa; and daughter Annette; his sisters-in-law Alice (John) Melvie and Elsie (Kenneth) Mjelve, along with numerous family and friends. Olaf was predeceased by siblings, Margaret, John and Kenneth (Ingvar).
