Nora “Elaine” Toney
1945-2020
Nora “Elaine” Toney – age 75, of
Annapolis Valley First Nation, Cambridge Station, Kings County, passed
away on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 in the Evergreen Home for Special
Care, Kentville. Born in Berwick, Kings County, she was the daughter
of the late Carleton “Phil” and Dorothy Mae (Mapplebeck)
Corkum. Growing up, she loved the outdoors, and loved horseback
riding. She worked at the Berwick Hospital and several nursing homes
as a PCW helping to care for others. She loved to bake, making sure
that the smell of fresh bread warmed her home while also baking for
others around her. She really loved to knit. She was always knitting
for her family and her extended First Nations family making sure
everyone was warm and cozy in their sweaters, socks, mittens and
gloves. That was Elaine. She was always taking care of other people
while never ever complaining about what she didn’t have and
most likely would never have. Even in the later years of her life she
found a way to tuck a few dollars in an envelope and send to her loved
ones to celebrate a birthday or Christmas, a true testament to someone
who found a way to give when they have little. Afflicted by physical
and mental ailments, she never let those get in the way of her love
for her husband, Jerome and her family. She was so proud of her
family, her children and grandchildren and celebrated in their
accomplishments. All you had to do was look at mom’s face
while speaking of her family and her smile spoke to that love and
pride. Elaine is survived by her sons, James (Carla), New Minas,
Philip (Katherine Taylor), Shelburne; daughters, Grace (Kenneth
Kennedy) and Theresa (Cory Carter), both of Annapolis Valley First
Nation; brother, Allan, Cambridge; grandchildren, Deanna, Lukas,
Jayden, Brody, Cameron and Shyla; many nieces, nephews, cousins and
extended family. A special thank you to Terry Cross who was
a good friend to Elaine in her final years. In addition to her
parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jerome Toney. Cremation
has taken place and there will be no visitation, by request.
Burial will be held at a later date in the St. Bernadette’s
Church Cemetery, Annapolis Valley First Nation, Cambridge Station.
Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the
Lung Association or the Canadian Mental Health Association of Nova
Scotia. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family
Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
