Nona Pearl (Saunders) Bragg
Sydney Mines
It is with full and loving hearts that the family of Nona Pearl Bragg announce her passing at Parkstone Enhanced Care on Wednesday, November 25, 2020.
Born in Glovertown, Newfoundland, on June 15, 1944, Nona was the daughter of the late Alfred and Mabel (Fifield) Saunders.
As a young child, she moved with her family to Corner Brook, Newfoundland where she grew up and attended school. Following high school, she began her career as a switchboard operator with Avalon Telephone Company Limited and the Newfoundland Telephone Company. Once married, she moved to Cape Breton and started working as a switchboard operator with H.B. Nickerson’s and Sons Limited in North Sydney. Several years later, she became a switchboard operator/clerk at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital (Northside General Hospital), where she worked for 28 years, until her retirement. She resided in Sydney Mines for the majority of her life.
Nona was a woman of faith and a lifelong member of the AMS at St. Andrews Presbyterian church. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, who was kind and loving, patient and helpful. She always loved being with others and was fortunate to have made many long-lasting friendships, which she valued greatly. She welcomed visitors into her home, often with a cup of tea and a meal on the table. She worked hard, regularly volunteered her time, and thoroughly enjoyed doing kind things to help others whenever she could.
It is said, “In life, it’s not where you go, it’s who you travel with.” Nona truly embraced this sentiment. She loved spontaneous road trips with her husband Gordon and traveling with friends and family all over the world, enjoying countless adventures along the way. No matter where her adventures took her, however, there was no place as special as her home province, Newfoundland, which she loved to talk about and visit.
Nona was always excited to attend arts and entertainment events around Cape Breton, as she had a true appreciation for music. Anyone who knew Noni was sure to hear about her love of her favorite Irish singer, Daniel O’Donnell.
Nona is survived by her daughter Karen (Bob) Strangward, Fall River; her son Alfred (Stacey) Bragg, Hubley; and her five grandchildren: Rob and Ryan Strangward, Max, Sam and Ali Bragg. She is also survived by her sister, Jane (Eric) Payne; her nieces: Maxine (Dennis) Lushman, Susan (Rod) Follett and Cynthia (Bill) Power and many family and friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Gordon Bragg (2003), her daughter Judy Bragg (1971) and her niece Mona Payne (1991).
Our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to family and friends who embraced our mom throughout her life. Words cannot express our appreciation to everyone who helped make the most of every moment and helped her live her life to the fullest possible since her diagnosis. We would also like thank the staff at Northside Homemakers, Seabright Rest Home, Parkstone Enhanced Care, and volunteers.
Due to COVID restrictions, a memorial service and interment will be announced at later date.
Donations can be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Society, or to a charity of one’s choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
