It is with great sadness that the family of the late Nellie Caul announces her passing at her home on Thursday, April 30, 2020, at the age of 99. She has now joined her husband Pius, son Ken and daughter Theresa in heaven. She will be sadly missed by her son Richard (Chantelle O’Driscoll) and grandson Reigan in Ottawa, as well as, many nieces, nephews and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Nellie is predeceased by her parents and twelve brothers and sisters.
Nellie’s wish was to remain at home throughout her later years. This was made possible by her special caregivers: Debbie, Alice, Winnie, Sandra, Lori and Clara. Also, making this possible were Dr. Alan McComiskey, Nurse Practioner Lori Chaffey and Nurse Elizabeth Lomond.
Nellie and other moms of her generation were trailblazers of the Community Living movement. Nellie’s vision, determination and courage enabled her persistence to trigger a wave of deinstitutionalization for all persons with intellectual disabilities. She maintained a close rapport with members of all levels of government, and even knew some of them personally. Many families today feel the loving benefit of all Nellie’s incredible work on behalf of all people with disabilities. In 2010, Nellie was recognized on a provincial level for her volunteer work and received the “Seniors of Distinction Award” (www.releases.gov.nl.ca/releases/2010/health/0625n02.htm).
Throughout all life’s challenges she remained a very supportive and loving wife, mother and grandmother, all the while being a devout Catholic and dedicated churchgoer. From the time Rick was born, and particularly as she aged, she dearly enjoyed spending time with him and was overjoyed to become a grandmother to his son Reigan in her 89th year. She cherished the last 10 years watching Reigan grow up from a distance. The contact was made easier with Nellie purchasing her first laptop at age 87 and getting her first iPad as a gift from her son when she turned 94.
When the times permit, go outdoors, laugh with a child, enjoy a family meal and cherish the moment.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at St. Stephen’s Parish in Stephenville on Wednesday August 26th, 2020 at 1 pm with interment to follow in the Hillside Interfaith Cemetery.
You are invited to share memories of Nellie or expressions of condolence on Russell’s Funeral Home (Stephenville) website.
