Nelle’s Obituary
NEW GLASGOW – Nelle Mae Miller, 100, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, June 10, 2020 in the Maritime Odd Fellows Home, Pictou.
Born in Bass River, Colchester County, she was a daughter of the late Arnold Dickson and Myrtle (Corbett) McIntosh. Nelle graduated from the former Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. In her graduating year, she was honoured to have been requested by the Superintendent of Nurses to create a uniform design for the grad ring, which she did in collaboration with local jeweler, David Neima. Apart from graduating classes 1947 and 1974, all Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing grads have proudly worn this ring design. While working as a nurse she met her husband, Bruce, and they shared 60 wonderful years together, raising three children and eagerly welcoming their grandchildren and great granddaughter. Nelle was a 50-year plus member of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow where she served with the United Church Women in several capacities. She also volunteered with the Aberdeen Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and in the community. When she and Bruce became “empty nesters,” she obtained her real estate license and was employed with her friend, Lee Langille at Royal Lepage, New Glasgow for several years. Nelle enjoyed a long and happy life, wintering in Florida with Bruce and spending summer months at the cottage in Chance Harbour.
Surviving are sons, Tom (Lori), Greenhill; David (Lisa), Toronto, Ont.; daughter, Kathryn (Emil), Toronto; Amy Falkner, Ottawa, Ont.; grandchildren, Christy and Matthew Miller, Greenhill; Sophie and Molly Sher, Toronto; great granddaughter, Kenzie, Greenhill; sister-in-law, Elsie McIntosh, Bass River; many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and stepfather, Kenneth McIntosh, she was predeceased by her husband, Dr. R. Bruce Miller; sister, Georgie; brothers, Ralph and Floyd.
A Celebration of Nelle’s life will be held at a later date.
Nelle’s family wish to thank the Maritime Odd Fellows Home staff and Dr. Randy Burrill for the exceptional care she received over the past ten months. They especially wish to thank nieces and nephews, Sherry (Terry) Patriquin, Greg (Melanie) Dickson, Joan Purdy and Jack (Rona) Purdy for their love and kindness over the years.
If desired, donations may be made in Nelle’s memory in support of children’s programs to the Trinity United Church Miller Trust or Helping Hands Funds or, Tearmann Society for Abused Women. (Please click the underlined to donate online.)
