Obituary for
Nancy Phyllis Douglas
1947-2020
Nancy died peacefully at home on Tuesday June 2nd. She was predeceased by her parents Alexander (1981) and Phyllis (nee Wright) in 2008. She leaves behind her partner Gisele, brothers Donald (Natasha) and Andrew, niece Erika and nephews James and Anthony. Nancy was a generous, loyal friend who will be mourned by many. She will be sadly missed by those who supported her during her illness including her cousin Marilyn from Saskatchewan. She accompanied and cared for Nancy on trips and cruises, the last one being in February of this year.
Nancy became a registered nurse, but quickly switched to education, starting out as a teacher and retiring as principal at Connaught School in 2001. She worked tirelessly to improve the lives of students in schools from disadvantaged neighborhoods, raising funds for breakfast programmes and extra materials for Focus on Future Schools to level the playing field for those students. Nancy also served on the board of directors of Somerset West Community Health Centre. She was active in the Women Teachers Association of Ontario at the local and provincial levels during the years of affirmative action at the Ottawa Board of Education. She was also involved in education at the international level, having taught in Africa, and raised funds for many years for CWFWA (Canadian Women For Women in Afghanistan) by hosting parties in her home. Nancy enjoyed both travelling around the world and Canadian winters. She was an avid skier and loved walking in Ottawa neighborhoods with friends. She was a superb cook and her house was always filled with laughter, good food and good friends.
A celebration of a life well lived will be organized at a later date.
Memorial donations to The Education Foundation of Ottawa (www.educationfoundationottawa.ca) or the School Breakfast Program (onfe-rope.ca) would be appreciated.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Nancy Phyllis Douglas 1947 2020..
