Myrtle Smith (Korell), (McEwen)
On September 2, 2020, Myrtle Smith, (Korell), (McEwen), passed away peacefully at the Selkirk Regional Hospital after a short battle with Cancer.
Myrtle McEwen was born on November 6, 1944 to Bert and Elizabeth McEwen and grew up as one of 8 siblings on a farm on Willis Road in West St. Paul, Manitoba. Myrtle was predeceased by 6 of her 7 siblings: Russel, Ethel, Duncan, Clara, Bill and Melvin, leaving behind her brother Mervin.
Myrtle married Gunter Korell in 1966 and had one child, Christian Korell. She and Gunter, along with her brother Melvin, started White Horse Plains Tree Farms in St. Francois Xavier in 1973. She also was a partner in McEwen Brothers Landscaping.
Myrtle moved to Alberta in 1991 to help her Brother Bill’s family with their Landscaping and sod farm business. She spent approximately 10 years in Alberta before moving back to the Winnipeg area to then help her son Christian with his various businesses including Barnes & Duncan Land Surveying & Engineering, and Clear Concepts, where she was instrumental in providing sound business advice and book keeping services.
While in Alberta, Myrtle met Jim Smith and they spent approximately 10 years living together before getting married in 2005. Myrtle leaves behind her husband Jim, her son Christian and his wife Alison, and her two granddaughters Kennedy and Maya. Myrtle also shared a stepdaughter Shauna and a grandchild, Kristen Mann, with Jim.
Myrtle had a tremendous spirit for life. Her wisdom, advice and love will be greatly missed by the many people that knew her and loved her. Thank you Myrtle for the positive impact you had on so many lives.
A celebration of life will be planned for Myrtle in 2021.
