Myrtle June Oliver 19302020

Myrtle “June” Oliver
1930-2020
OLIVER, Myrtle
“June” July 15, 1930 –
July 23, 2020. It is heavy hearts we announce the passing of our
mother, June (Latimer) Oliver, in the Milford Haven Home for Special
Care, Guysborough, NS. She was the eldest daughter of the late Charlie
and Augusta (MacArthur) Latimer and was the last surviving member of
her immediate family. She spent her early years in Arichat, Nova
Scotia in the Latimer home across from the
Courthouse.
When she and our Dad, the late Harold Oliver, married in
1954, she moved to Point Tupper where they began a family.
In 1970, she moved again, this time across the harbour to Port
Hawkesbury. In September, 2016, after her Dementia made it
impossible to be at home, Mom moved to The Milford Haven Home for
Special Care.
Mom started her career at the Royal Bank in 1948 at the
George and Townsend Branch in Sydney. Not long after taking the job in
Sydney, she returned to Arichat to work at the Royal Bank Branch in
Arichat where she remained until she married. When she married, she
decided to stay at home to raise her family. In 1964, she
returned to work out side the home and took a job at the Royal Bank,
Port Hawkesbury Branch. Mom moved through the ranks at the
Royal Bank, beginning as a teller and eventually becoming the Senior
Loans Officer, a job to which she dedicated herself for the next 25
years. Mom finally retired in 1985. Although she loved her
job, it was the customers…her customers…that she
deeply cared for. Even as her memory dimmed, she
would frequently speak of her days working at the bank and the many
customers who she had come to know and help over the
years.
Mom was very active in her community serving with the Point
Tupper Home and School Association; served many years on the St.
Mark’s United Church Board and UCW; was a founding member of
the Island View Health Services Ladies Auxiliary; served on the Board
of Directors of the Strait Richmond Hospital; served on the board of
the Point Tupper Heritage Association and was the secretary treasurer
for the South Brook Cemetery. For many years, Mom audited
the books for the Girl Guides.
Mom loved to work with her hands and knitting, quilting, and
needlework became favorite past times. She was known for her beautiful
quilts and spent many hours with her quilting groups at St
Mark’s and The Evergreen Seniors Club. She also enjoyed
curling in her younger years at the Port Hawkesbury Curling Club and
remained a lifetime fan of the game. Mom was always ready for a game
of cards, be it at home at the kitchen table or out to a card game.
She especially enjoyed her morning Tim’s visits with her
friend June Stirling. She was regarded by many Tim’s
customers and employees alike, as quite the social
butterfly.
Mom loved to cook and her cookies and desserts were the best.
There was always the smell of fresh bread in our home and always
homemade cookies in the can. Visits from Charlie and Glenna and their
families, meant Mom would be preparing their favorite meals and making
sure there was plenty of fresh bread and cookies in the
house.
Mom will be deeply missed by her children, Charlie and
Christine (Taylor) Georgetown, Ontario; Joyce and Lindsay (Snair),
Port Hawkesbury, NS; and Glenna and John (Campbell) Kanata, Ontario.
Her grandchildren, Joshua (Angela Yeo) of Petrolia, Ontario; Chelsey
(David Westwood) London, England; Jared (Bhreagh Sheppard) Troy, Nova
Scotia; Jessica (Michael Buss) Kanata, Ontario; Catherine (Oliver
Opplett) Ottawa, Ontario; Karen, Kanata, Ontario. Her
great-grandchildren, Clarke and Rose Oliver; Tobias, Winnifred, and
Montgomery Westwood; Isla Snair and Kinley Buss and her sister-in-law,
Bea Latimer (Kenneth), Prince George, British Columbia, and of course,
she will be missed by her many nieces and nephews.
Mom was predeceased by her husband, Harold Oliver in 1999,
her siblings and their respective spouses, Arthur and Geraldine,
Kenneth, Nelson and Hazel, Marion and John Dingle and Shirley May in
infancy.
Mom will rest in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port
Hawkesbury on Saturday, July 25th from 2-4 and
6-8p.m. Her funeral will be held at St. Mark’s United
Church, Bernard St, Port Hawkesbury on Sunday, July
26th at 2p.m. She will be interred at
the Southbrook Cemetery, Port Hawkesbury. A donation in her
memory can be made to St. Mark’s United Church, Point Tupper
Heritage Church, or a charity of your choice. Words of comfort may be
forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
“How
lucky we are to have something that makes saying goodbye so
hard.” We will love you forever
Mom.
