Murray Charles Jelley
On December 29, 2020, at 94 years of age, Murray Jelley passed peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre. Son of the late Ray Jelley and Helen (Osborne), brother to the late Bill Jelley (June), devoted husband of 69 years to Margaret (Coates), father and hero of Peter (Heather) and proud Grandad of Mathew and Paul (Anna). Murray
Charles Jelley was born June 21st, 1926 at York County Hospital in the Town of Newmarket. At an early age he joined the family business (established in 1905 by his grandfather) with his father Ray Jelley, to form R. W. Jelley & Son Limited plumbing, heating and tin smithing. Dad proudly carried on the family business until he retired in 1991. Dad loved sports, particularly hockey. As a swift and tricky winger, he played hockey for the Newmarket Merchants Hockey Club (1943-44), the Newmarket Redmen O.H.A. Junior B Hockey Club (1944-45) and the Newmarket Spitfires Intermediate “A” O.H.A. Hockey Club (1948-49). He was an avid alpine skier until he was 75 years young and had frequent opportunities to ski with his grandsons Mathew and Paul, memories they will hold dear in their hearts. Dad had a great love of music which became a very important part of his life. This love began when he played bugle with the Newmarket RSA Bugle Band, winning gold medals with them in 1940 and 1941. His love of music moved him to join the Barbershop Society (SPEBSQSA) in the early 1950’s. As a proud and accomplished baritone, his barbershop career spanned over 60 years which included singing with the Aurora Chorus, York North Chorus, Thornhill Chorus, The Markham Chorus, the Scarborough Dukes of Harmony and finally the Upper Canada
Chordsmen. Dad always had a song in his heart. He will be remembered for his positive outlook on life, his great and often subtle sense of humour, his wry smile, and that loving sparkle in his eyes when he greeted you. Although my Dad’s song has ended, his melody shall always remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Southlake Regional Health Centre or the
Salvation Army.
As per Dad’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. There will be a private service with
the immediate family.
